Free Music Notes for Different ClassFree Music Review: I would have given it ten stars.... Hit: 5 Stars
This is my favorite album of all time, but for good reason. It escapes me why it never caught on in America, cause it's much better than This is Hardcore, which was much more popular here (probably because of the cover photo). Anyway, Different Class is the kind of album that you really must listen to all the way through--though I've heard it several hundreds of times, I still can't pick a favorite song. The music is everything pop music should be: crazy (Disco 2000), sexy (Pencil Skirt) and generally dead-on in every way. Jarvis Cocker is the kind of lead singer and songwriter who is charismatic and glamorous enough to be a film star and intelligent and observant enoough to be an important literary figure, but he never lets you forget that he's been disappointed and humbled and experienced life from the bottom. Though the music's for common people, you will no doubt recognize it as something very, very uncommonly good.
Free Music Review: P.E.R.F.E.C.T. Hit: 5 Stars
Oh, why do maybe only two bands in the world produce music like this? And why have I only heard of one? This is a stellar CD, which vacillates between pop anthems and sexy, am-I-being-stalked? lounge vocals. Pulp has grown up a LOT from the days of His'n'Hers -- this is a diverse gem of an album, which each track boasting a distinctive personality. This is Britpop in highest form -- the arrangements are polished, the lyrics standard Pulp fare (read: cocky and intriguing), and the vocals (thank you, Jarvis) inimitable as always. The supporting background music, while a great improvement upon their previous album, is still a little too brash to live up to the all-over classiness, but still manages to be catchy. With the exception of "Something Changed", every track on this album is equally brilliant. Not even Pulp makes music like this anymore -- poppy, a little shallow, yes, and completely sublime.
Free Music Review: I missed out on this years ago... Hit: 5 Stars
Back in the mid 90's, I dismissed Pulp as just another BritPop band. Come to find out, I was wrong. A good friend gave this to me as a CD exchange and I have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed.
The standout tracks are clearly (IMO) "Mis-Shapes", "Common People" and "I Spy". The music is rather jangly and at times has a distinctly dance-able beat. What won me over though were the lyrics. Jarvis Cocker manages to create a fantastic mental image to go along with his lyrics, which are alternately humorous and serious, occassionally silly ("Sorted for E's and Wizz") and vaguely malevolent ("I Spy"). Cocker's delivery is very basic - he doesn't have a lot of range, but he makes good use of his voice and some of the spoken parts of the songs send chills up my spine.
All in all, this is a great album. I wish that I'd given it a chance back in 1995.
Free Music Review: PULP RULES! Hit: 5 Stars
Im so happy I got to see them when they came to Los Angeles on thier "Different Class" tour. I almost lost my virginity at that show! ultra cool! I hope they come back to the states...anyways. what can i say that hasnt already been said if you've read the other reviews...buy this album or at least get a copy or something, its a classic....even 5 yrs after it came out its still makes my blood boil and reminds me of wonderful times spent growing up to pulp! too bad the britpop thing is kind of over now. Well if you like ... and you like music and doing ... and you think society is kind of messed up with its priorities then you will dig pulp! I hope Jarvis and his band goes on to more success after britpop, from what ive read about his life, he really deserves any good things that come to him now and in the future! thanks Jarvis :)
Free Music Review: Yes! Hit: 5 Stars
Well, yes, it's brilliant, obviously. There was always the worry when Common People came along that the unbelievable expectations for the album would not be met. They were, of course. I think that Feeling Called Love and Something Changed are kinda weak (how 'bout Mile End or PTA, ya fascists?) but the rest of the tracks are great. CP strikes you instantly, but it's the tracks that take a few more listens to appreciate--Live Bed Show, I Spy, Monday Morning, Bar Italia--that are REALLY great. I don't know if I like this more than His'n'Hers, but I do like it a lot. Oh yeah, and be sure to get an import version with the bonus Second Class disc, which features assorted b-sides and whatnot. It's maddeningly incomprehensive, but it'll fill up some of the gaps in your collection--and you absolutely MUST hear PTA.
