I feel the same about this CD as I do about Putumayo's Cape Verde.. they are both WONDERFUL! I have TONS of world music and Putumayo, but as far as I am concerned, these are the two BEST! The Portuguese and African mixture of exotic rhythms, guitars, and primitive instruments creates a totally unique, celebratory music that has me dancing around the house and playing them OVER and OVER! They get better and better with each play. I don't know how I could have ever lived so long without ever hearing this before. I've GOT to visit Cape Verde and some of the other places listed.
Putumayo Presents: Afro-Portuguese Odyssey Poster
Showcasing styles of music from African countries colonized by Portugal, this compilation doesn't feature the most famed musicians of the representative nations, but it's a uniformly strong collection nonetheless. Cape Verde's morna and coladeira, Angola's semba and kizomba, Guinea's gumb? and Mozambique's marrabenta are among the genres of music represented. Standout Guinean vocalist Eneida Marta brings a laid-back maturity to her phrasing on "Na Bu Mons." Bidente's "Considjo di Garandis" is an impressive mix of African blues and flamenco. Ruy Mingas is a blast from the past who hadn't recorded in 30 years, as is Z? Manel, whose slow bluesy "Bu Fidjo Femia" is culled from 2001's Maron di Mar, his first album in nearly 20 years. This blend of Portuguese and indigenous cultures didn't happen under the best of circumstances, but there is no doubt that it's produced beautiful music. --Tad HendricksonInternational Music CDs
