Putumayo's "World Party" isn't so much an exploration of diverse world party music,but a rather forgettable compilation in the vein of the infamous Macarena. The opening song,Roy Paci's "Ciuri Cirui" is a joyful Italian dance,but it basically goes downhill from there. There are a few other highlights--infectious reggae from Burning Spear and Sarzino's "Cochabamba",which sounds like South African township music.

"World Party" serves best as background music,but it's like mild salsa. It lacks the zest. Osibisa's "Sunshine Day" is bland. The Zydeco Hi-Rollers' "Just One Kiss" is generic Creole,the musical equivalent of gumbo from a box. Jean-Paul Pognon's French salsa music is cheesy,con queso indeed! The worst is Laid Back's "Groovin' on a Feeling" that samples the Beatles' "All you need is love."

Putumayo has done better party albums--such as the fabulous (but sadly,out of print) "New World Party",which had a great mix of styles,as well as its Groove albums. "World Party" won't get the party started,but might end it early.
