Free Music Notes for The Dana Owens AlbumFree Music Review: Remarkable Hit: 5 Stars
These songs could belong to another place in time, but they certainly dust off well and thoroughly shine when Owens sings them. When she sings "Simply Beautiful" with the song's writer, Al Green, as back-up, the result is a perfect blend of their shared talent for spicing songs with soul-dousing splashes of improvised vocal accents. The result is simply beautiful. When Owens sings Bill Withers' "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh," she makes it all her own. Her vocal range is impeccable and her emotional connection to Withers' song while she sings it convinces the listener that she is actually sharing her thoughts about a recent heartache. It's easily assumed that Owens enjoyed recording these songs. Even though she has subtly refreshed each one, she does retain the aspects of these venerated songs that give each its personality. The accompaniments are never overdone and are excellent. Consequently, this album is not at all overproduced. Other stand-out songs are Barbara Lewis' "Hello Stranger," Nat King Cole's "Lush Life" and The Mamas and the Papas "California Dreamin.'" However, had the latter not been perfectly tweaked with a jazzier accompaniment, it may have seemed just a bit out of place with its eleven companions on this CD. It's nice to hear aged but timeless songs revived by Owens' superb vocal performance and her amazing ability to perfectly interpret each one with mature eloquence.
Free Music Review: This is a pleasant surprise Hit: 5 Stars
The Dana Owens album proves that Queen Latifah can really sing. I loved listening to this album very much. My favorite track is Mercy Mercy Mercy. She sounds so good singing this song. I think her voice has so much power and energy. I think she really sings from the heart here. I loved the horns in the background on this track too. Baby Get Lost is a sassy track with attitude, and I loved it Queen Latifah really gives her listeners a taste of what R and B music sounded like it in the 40's.
Another highlight track for me is the song California Dreaming. This performance is so soulful and excellent. It is a great song. I think Queen Latifah's cover of this song is the best one I've ever heard. Queen Latifah sounds so sexy and smooth on Nina Simone's classic blues song I Put A Spell on You. She really makes this song her own. The legendary Herbie Hancock does an awesome job playing the piano on this track. I loved this song. I never heard of the song Close Your Eyes before, but I loved the way Queen Latifah sings this I just felt so relaxed listening to this track. Her vocal performance on this song is so good.
I like her rendition of the Bill Withers song Same Love. It is a classic R and B song from the 70's I think Queen Latifah does a great job singing this song. The Dana Owens album is a pleasant surprise.
Free Music Review: Changed The Way I Look At Jazz... Hit: 5 Stars
I really started to love Queen Latifah when I went to the movies to see her in "Bringing Down The House". She was so funny. Then I saw "Chicago", that was an awesome movie that really made me enjoy the art of Jazz music. Then she releases the "Dana Owens Album", an album full of classic Jazz tunes. One word for this album...Amazing! This is such a joy to listen to. It makes you go to a happy place when everything else around you isn't happy. From beginnig with the Dinah Washington classic "Baby Get Lost" to the "Living Lush" the ending track to this beautiful prepared album. There is something here for everyone. Free Music Review: What's in a name? Hit: 5 Stars
"The Dana Owens Album" is a very personal album, and it is very beautiful, poetic, vivacious, gorgeous, stunning; all the words used to describe the beautiful Queen who gave this to us. Queen Latifah (New Jersey native hard-core repper) has put together a collection of jazzy tunes and wonderful lyrics that hit you below the belt. It is a definite love affair for your ears. I love this CD. I feel that with "The Dana Owens Album", we see the rebirth of a now much more mature Queen Latifah as in artist, showing us she is the Hollywood package all rolled into one (she can act, sing, rap). I had heard her sing on a few tracks on her "Order in the Court" CD, but I had no idea that she could take jazz by storm. I highly recommend you purchase this CD whether you are a jazz/blues fan, a Queen Latifah fan (as I am a strong one), or just a person who loves to hear ecclectic music that will take you on a voyage.
***The only tracks I skip are 1,4,9. I am not saying that they are not good, but I don't particularly care for them. She shines on the following songs: "Hard Times" (my absolute favorite) "Lush Life" "I Put a Spell on You" "California Dreamin'" and "Simply Beautiful".
If I could give this CD any more stars, I would.
Free Music Review: A wonderful suprise!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Many reviewers will compare the Queen Latifah's "Dana Owens Album" to the latest works of Anita Baker, Jill Scott, K.D. Lang and Nora Jones. Queen absolutely soars above these and many more with her first jazz/r&b recording.
From her vocal talent through her song selection and the recording quality, I classify this as my biggest surprise of 2004. No matter how talented you think Queen is, this project will surprise you. And if you, like me, never considered yourself a Queen Latifah fan, well, ... you'd better get on the bus. The only comparison I will make between the Dana Owens Album and the heretofore mentioned songstresses is this: I was completely taken by this project like I was by Rapture, Ingenue, Who is Jill Scott and Come Away with me. Comparison to Anita's, K.D.'s, Jill's and Nora's most recent projects is truely unfair.... to Anita, K.D., Jill and Nora. And I am long time fans of each of them.
I could go on intellectualizing about the call/response between Queen and Al Green or spiritualizing about Queens old soul in Lush Life but, bottom line, if you count yourself a collector, a muscic fan or a casual listener, you DESERVE to hear The Dana Owens ALBUM.
