Free Music Notes for The Dana Owens AlbumFree Music Review: More "lush life" please... Hit: 5 Stars
Upon seeing "Living Out Loud", I had the exact same reaction as another reviewer, Damon French: Queen Latifah, please run into a studio and record an entire album! So when I heard this album was due out, I was pysched.
I listened to the entire disc three times before writing this. "lush life" is by far, head and shoulders, the best track on the disc. And to say it's the best, I mean it's a 12 out of 10, where others such as "if i had you" and "baby get lost" are 9's and 10's.
I just wish that some other tracks, like "california dreamin'" or "the same love that made me laugh", while still great songs and very well done, were on some other album. Certainly, they show that much more of the range of Ms. Owens. But their presence sort of breaks the mood and feel that the other songs establish.
Overall, this is a gorgeous performance by an immensely talented singer, backed by an equally gorgeous sounding group of musicians. I have to give it 5 stars because "lush life" is so completely mesmerizing.
Grammys for sure.
Free Music Review: Wonderful soulful singing Hit: 5 Stars
Queen Latifah can justifiably be mentioned in the sentence as Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughn with this album. The arrangements are gorgeous, as is her voice. "Laugh" is destined to become the first big hit off this album, while I think "Mercy Mercy Mercy" is also going to get wide play. After "Chicago" it was only a matter of time before she took on some blues and jazz standards. But she does it in a way that adds some spice to what could have been dutiful renditions. Even "Lush Life" which everybody seems to feel the need to record, sounds fresh.
I don't want to see her abandon hip-hop completely, but if she can drop in some albums like this once in a while, I think she'll have unusual appeal across ages and backgrounds. I'm going to buy this CD in quantities to give for Christmas presents -- anybody old or young would enjoy it.
The only drawback is that I think the songs could have been mixed -- there are three slow cuts at the beginning and I would have put some stronger songs up front and slowed it down later on.
Free Music Review: The Queen has Arrived Hit: 5 Stars
WOW! I've followed the Queen's career for quite some time and I must say... with all the different avenues an artist has to chose to go down, she's made one of the best moves of her career!
Not only does she have the followers of her precedented debut as a hip-hop star..she has gained the repsect of true musical admirers. From this album I believe it was her intent to let us know that she's not finished or washed up.... there's much more out there for her to do and more ways than ever for her to continue in redefining herself!
This could be hailed as one of the BEST demonstrations of rythm and blues and Soul all in one!!..Being from the Home of the Blues... I know a little bit about what I'm talking about...If anyone enjoys the sultry sounds of Aretha or Etta James...this is one to purchase and play over and over! Once again, the Queen's done it to her own "tune"
Put the CD on, light the candles, open the wine... and Unwind!
Way to go Queen!
Free Music Review: Lush Latifah Hit: 5 Stars
I had anxiously awaited the arrival of this CD ever since I heard Queen Latifah sing in the film, Chicago, and subsequently bought the soundtrack for the film, Living Out Loud. However, after reading a few initial reviews of this CD, I fully expected to be underwhelmed. Maybe it helped that my expectations had been diminished -- I don't know. But what I do know is that this CD is absolutely beautiful, as is Queen Latifah's voice. From the very opening notes of "Baby Get Lost," I knew my fears were unfounded, and Latifah had delivered a CD that was all I was hoping for. I'll admit that I found the songs, "Moody's Mood For Love" and "Close Your Eyes" somewhat forgetful, but when you consider that they come between the unbelievable "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh" and the most beautiful version of "California Dreamin'" I've ever heard, it's hardly any wonder. With this CD, the Queen proves she has not lost her Midas touch.

On this album, she really surprised me. Her voice is that of a seasoned singer. This album features classy vocal pop. This album shows her vestility as singer/songwriter/proformer. I listen to this album when I want to relax or need to unwind. Queen Latifah's voice is quite soothing! My favourite songs on this album are "Simply Beautiful", "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", "Baby Get Lost" and "California Dreamin'." I hope she releases more albums in which she sings in the future! Recommended.
