Free Music Notes for Trav'lin' Light

Free Music Review: fine new release by the great Queen Latifah
Hit: 5 Stars

Queen Latifah scores another coup with her album entitled Trav'lin' Light. Queen Latifah never sounded better and each track on this CD proves it. People are bound to enjoy this album.

The track set begins with "Poetry Man." The intro music with guitar works great; and when Queen Latifah comes in this number takes off! Queen Latifah sings this with great sensitivity and she never misses a note despite several subtle and complex tempo and key changes. The musical arrangement adds strength to "Poetry Man" but it always leaves Queen Latifah's vocals in the spotlight. Queen Latifah compares her lover to a great poet; and this touches me greatly. "Georgia Rose" features Queen Latifah singing this with the great Stevie Wonder. "Georgia Rose" has excellent harmonica courtesy of Stevie Wonder; and Queen Latifah sings this sweetly and all her heart and soul. The piano arrangement works wonders for "Georgia Rose," too. "Georgia Rose" sends a message that black people are equal to whites in the eyes of God. What an awesome ballad! Moreover, "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars" features the great Toots Thielemans on harmonica; and Queen Latifah sings this like the pro she always is! Queen Latifah handles the minor keys effortlessly and the guitar, strings, percussion and harmonica enhance the natural beauty of this number. "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars" also explores the feelings a woman has once she has met her very special man.

"Trav'lin' Light" begins with a great musical flourish; and Queen Latifah sings this to perfection. She sings of a woman who is "trav'lin' light" after her man has left her. The piano arrangement adds to the number as do the strings; and Queen Latifah delivers "Trav'lin' Light" flawlessly. I predict that you will enjoy "Trav'lin' Light" very, very much.

"I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl," a number made famous by the great Bessie Smith, gets splendid treatment by Queen Latifah as she sings this passionately with all her heart and soul. Queen Latifah swings gently on this very special number; she sings of a woman who wants a man to love her the way she wants to be loved. Great piano arrangement--and the bass playing by Christian McBride leaves nothing to be desired either!

"Gone Away" has artistically beautiful changes between major and minor keys as Queen Latifah sings of her man who has left her. This passionate number features Queen Latifah delivering a torch song ballad with the grace of the finest of divas. "Gone Away" is a highlight of this album; listen for some great jamming and singing during the fine musical interlude in the middle of this number. Even when Queen Latifah speaks some lines she remains the best of the best!

The CD ends fittingly with "I Know Where I've Been" from the recent movie release of Hairspray. The piano arrangement reflects sensitivity and good judgment; and Queen Latifah makes this a masterpiece with her singularly beautiful talent. I love that choir, too! "I Know Where I've Been" ends this exquisite album with strength, flair and beauty.

The liner notes give us a few great pictures of Queen Latifah; and we get the song credits as well.

Queen Latifah never does anything "half-baked;" and this album proves this fact yet again. Queen Latifah is and always will be nothing less than a national treasure; and we are much better off for Queen Latifah sharing her fine artistry with us.

Thank you, Queen Latifah!

Trav'lin' Light Poster

Grammy® award-winning recording artist, Queen Latifah, debuts on Verve Records with her new album Trav'lin' Light. On this jazz and R&B influenced album from legendary producers Tommy LiPuma and Ron Fair,Queen Latifah delivers sultry yet powerful performances on a hand-picked mix of familiar classics and forgotten jewels.
With Trav'lin' Light, singer/actress/rapper/Cover Girl Queen Latifah (née Dana Owens) continues her chameleonic pan-stardom. The latest musical chapter in Latifah's success-studded career began with 2004's The Dana Owens Album, on which she emerged as a nuanced crooner of jazz and R&B standards. She continues this mode on her Verve records debut, adding ample individuality to such well-loved classics as Johnny Mercer's title track, Nina Simone's "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl," and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" (with legendary harmonica pioneer Toots Thielemans). Steve Wonder's own harmonica playing lends nostalgic ornament to an otherwise rather forced "Georgia Rose," and much of the album languishes in similarly downbeat fare, though Latifah's voice is never wholly unbecoming of her song choices. Toward the album's end comes a welcome swerve for the energetic. Inspiring takes on the Pointer Sisters' "How Long" and Curtis Mayfield's "Gone Away" lead into the soaring choruses of "I Know Where I've Been." Taken together, these three songs superbly straddle the spectrum from the former rapper to the still-newly minted singer with a long lease on success and a peerless sense of how to grow older gracefully. --Jason Kirk
