Free Music Review: Why The Cosmos Rocks Me
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to laugh at the criticism that TCR is "over-produced". To me, there IS no such thing. I expected nothing less than the lavish layers that are so characteristic of Queen in the studio, especially the 70's works. I wasn't disappointed in that respect. In fact, after playing the album daily for two months, one day I discovered the melodic bassline in Time To Shine.

It's hard to pick a favorite track. A lot depends on my mood at the time.. I think TCR should come with a warning label - This CD should be played at 11! (If you don't get the joke, it's from the satirical film, This Is Spinal Tap, and it means the highest possile volume.) 'Voodoo', and 'Through the Night', both reportedly Paul's compositions, are at the top of my list. 'TTN' seems to be written about his wife Cynthia, but to me, it is also a prayer (or a psalm, as it's set to music). 'Surf's Up... School's Out' is so different, and it's really grown on me. LOVE the harmonica and synthesizer on it. Though I have a hard time understanding the line following "wanna ride with you", supposedly "this ride still runs", but it sounds more like "this ride's too rough".
My least fav is 'Small'. I have difficulty identifying with the sentiment, and I don't care much for the Macbeth-ish synthesizer in it. And the chorus sounds a bit like a bunch of drunken blokes in a pub. 'Call Me' has the catchiest hook on TCR, and sounds like a Deacy ditty. The line "get myself a wife or two" is classic; and the laugh at the end sums it all up for exactly what it is, a lighthearted, fun, silly piece. But the kind of "cheesy" guitar solo throws it off a bit, like it tries a little too hard to be what my brother deemed as "a goofy song". And while 'Warboys' kicks some serious guitar a**, I can't listen to it when I'm fighting a migraine (but it's not as "bad" as Chinese Torture). It's a shame 'We Believe' didn't come out six months prior to the album, beause it seems to be written for President Obama, and would've made a great campaign theme song. The structure is deceptively simple, and builds powerfully, like Ravel's 'Bolero'. Some feel it's "too preachy", but I don't find that the case. 'Time To Shine' is also a great, uplifting number that would've been Obama worthy. And 'All Things That Glitter' would be a nice one for some female figure skater to use (as have 'Who Wants To Live Forever' and other Queen songs over the years).

On the negative side, I don't care for 'small reprise' at all. Maybe minus the vocals it would be okay. But I think the sea sounds of waves and gulls would've made a stronger "organic" ending, just fading soothingly off, and harkening back to the sounds of the creation and the eerie whale noises at start of TCR.

I also wish that Brian sang 'Still Burnin'. It kind of sounds like him on the first few lines. And it would've been nice to hear more of Roger's singing, too. I'm glad they took turns on 'SINT', even though I think it's more poignant when Rog sang it alone in concert. But I'm happy they kept it to that one song. I think even more vocal harmonies throughout might've made it feel more like a Queen album. I really like the way Bri's voice pops out on C-lebrity. There are other moments like that on TCR, but you have to really listen for them. I can understand when Freddie was terminally ill why they "let" him sing almost all the vocals, but maybe a little more B+R on TCR would've made it more Q + PR, instead of the reverse.

I think they were wise to drop the cover version of 'Runaway' from TCR. I like the guitar work, but it wouldn't have added anything to the flow. On the whole, this album has made me a very happy camper, getting me through what is turning out to be one of the snowiest and coldest winters on record. I'm hoping that there will be more to come, including a tour on the other side of the pond!

The Cosmos Rocks Poster

Tracks on the new Queen + Paul Rodgers album are all newly written by May, Taylor and Rodgers during the late 2007/ early 2008 recording sessions. `Say It's Not True', previously released at the end of last year by Queen + Paul Rodgers as a special World Aids Day download for Nelson Mandela's 46664 HIV AIDS charity will be included, plus a `first' for a Queen album - a cover version.
