Free Music Notes for A Night at the OperaFree Music Review: The Crown Jewel Hit: 5 Stars
What can be said about this album that hasn't been said a million times already? That it's Queen's crown jewel? That it's a masterpiece? That it features some of the most lush, gorgeous music ever featured on a Queen album? All of that, and so much more, is true. It is possibly the best cross-section of Queen's various styles, featuring head-banging rock (Death on Two Legs, I'm In Love...), quirky jauntiness (Good Company, Lazing..., Seaside Rendezvous), movingly sparsity ('39), dripping lushness (Love of My Life) and epic masterpiece (do I even have to say it?). Everything about this album has Queen stamped all over it.
My personal favorites, "Bohemian Rhapsody" aside, are "'39" and "Love of My Life". '39 is just a real toetapping folksong type of number, and definitely not a song Freddie could have pulled off the way Brian does, with his simple interpretation of the lyrics. The harmonies on this song are amazing as well. As for Love of My Life, a great crowd singalong in future concerts....it simply soars. From the arrangements to the harmonies (and seemingly impossible high notes), to the harp which Brian learned to play JUST FOR THIS SONG, it's impossibly gorgeous and heartbreaking.
And of course there is "Bohemian Rhapsody". Again, what can be said about this song? Mainly that it is the shining example of Queen's vision, not to mention the writing talents of Freddie Mercury, and no other band could have matched it.
I adore this album and have listened to it, beginning to end, many many times. There are few albums which I feel so strongly about. Just listening to the opening notes gives me chills. The Beatles had their Sgt Pepper, The Beach Boys had Pet Sounds. Queen had A Night at the Opera.
Free Music Review: THE Best Band's Best album? Hit: 5 Stars
To your hardcore Queen fan this album will have been played so many times the songs have ultimately lost their original impact. But every fan will agree, musically this is their finest.
From start to finish your attention is never diverted, never broken from the flawless musical exellence of 4 special people who did indeed set out to produce "...our Sergent Pepper album". Freddie's Death on Two Legs/Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon/Seaside Rendezous/Love of My Life and Bohemion Rhapsody provide the album's sence of excitment and twist from the norm, then again...name a Queen album where Freddie doen't do that! Brian May provides us with the hard rocking power riffs that'll have any fan thrashing a tennis racket air guitar style with enough experimentation to set queen apart from bands such as Led Zep and The Who etc. John Deacon's shameless ability to write songs of the most beautiful caliber is present on this album as once again he provides queen with the down to earth touch of class album fillers which are as good, if not better musically, than the albums highlights. And last but not least Roger Taylor's frowning ultimate rock god style song splashes the album with a much needed norm to tame the apocolyptic combination of all 4 members.
This album should be in everyone's collection, even half-arsed Queen fans who posses only greatest hits.
They went on to do bigger and better things as the album's went by...but never have they done something so perfectly and flawlessly constructed as 'A Night At The Opera'.
It has perfection written all over it...and the sleeve design's pretty sweet too!
Free Music Review: Simply The Best!! Hit: 5 Stars
When I look back over the last 20 years or so of rock n roll's history, I often wonder why Queen was never mentioned in the same breath,& with the same level of respect, as Led Zeppelin. I recently bought a greatest collection of Led Zep, & I realized why I made a right move in not investing my $$s in LZ in my growing years, & choose Queen instead. Do I think "Bohemian Rhapsody" is the greatest rock song of all time? A resounding YES!!. If you don't agree, it was voted in '91 by the British Phonographic Industry as the Best British Single of the last 25 years. "Stairway to Heaven" may be a great song by itself, but it doesn't hold a candle to Bohemian. I say that b'cos, for one, Stairway's climax chord progression is typical in rock, e.g. can be found in "All Along the Watchtower" & "Sultans of Swing"; i.e. you can copy it, & get away, but nobody cannnot re-create "Bohemian". That is the rule of being a genius. Freddie Merc was a better lead singer/showmanship than R Plant/Mick Jagger, & Brian May's guitar sounds almost always more intelligent than Jimmy Page's. Night At The Opera is a defining moment for Queen & Rock. Bohemian snowballed the effect of video music, & opera rock never sounded better. Freddie's gone & I do miss him, but when he was around, Queen was always able to stay close to the times. I mean, you won't hear Led Zep do a "Another One Bites A Dust"!! That is also what this album is all about - daring to take risks, & Queen has always done that. BTW, nobody played synthesiser in this album!! Cheers Queen
Free Music Review: 20th century Classic Hit: 5 Stars
An amazing classic of the 20th century.
Everyone knows the multi-layered classic rock-opera Bohemian Rhapsody, voted over and over the number one hit of all time.
I think The Prophets Song ' is just as powerful.Queen guitarist. Brian May wrote this after he had a dream about the Great Flood. Many religions and cultures have stories of floods, including the Great Flood of The Bible that led to Noah's Ark.But most (not all) music stars today lack imagination.)
Both Bohemian Rhapsody and The Prophets Song change pace and mood several times at just the right places making for a magnificent overall masterpiece.
The angry hard rocker 'Death on Two Legs' was dedicated to a former manager of the band. It is fantastic. I enjoyed the nonchalant and whimsical 'Seaside Rendezvous' and the camp 'Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon'.
I think '39'is a lovely story (it's about a man who go's into space for many years and does not age , but when he returns , his daughter , or granddaughter , is now an old lady). It shows why Brian May is recognized as one of the greatest guitarists of all times. Also poignant and beautiful is the reflective
'Good Company' about a man's cycle of life from infancy to old age.
.The operatic 'Love of My Life' -is a classic rock opera piece and was redone in 1979.
And the hard-rock Sweet Lady is great song about the two sides of a strained love relationship ! The greatest tribute ever to rock opera is The Night At The Opera.
It will always be a classic and testimony to one of the greatest pieces of rock ever.

The first time I heard this CD....I picked it up at the library on vinyl. Didnt really pay much attention to it until years later when i really started getting into Queen. Especially the re-issue of Bohemian Rhapsody for the film Wayne's World. Afterwards, I set out to search out a copy of this CD and finally obtained a copy of it on CD1. Death On Two Legs - 9/10 Good start to this CD. Notice the chords at the beginning and you'll hear the 'Psycho Theme' 2. Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon - 9/10 Very nice follow-up to Death On Two Legs. 3. I'm In Love With My Car - 7/10 Good Song 4. You're My Best Friend - 9/10 Another great song. 5. '39 - 8/10 The journey continues w/this track 6. Sweet Lady - 9/10 7. Seaside Rendezvous - 9/10 Along the same lines as Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon. 8. The Prophet's Song - 10/10 Definitely Paints a dark picture much like Death On Two Legs. Especially the voices which were layered over each other during the recording of this track. Try listening to this one through a set of headphones 9. Love Of My Life - 9/10 Soft waltz like track 10. Good Company - 8/10 Good track 11. Bohemian Rhapsody - 10/10 One Of the best tracks on this CD. Of course re-issued for Wayne's World. This song is what inspired me search out more Queen CDs. It all started with Bohemian Rhapsody. And then i just had to get a copy of We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. 12. God Save The Queen - 9/10 Nice Ending to this classic CD. Queen's rendition of England's National Anthem.
