Free Music Review: Good look at Queen's development over the years Hit: 5 StarsThis lengthy two-volume collection does a good job of taking the listener on a tour of Queen's musical chronology, as well as showcasing both the pros and cons present in the music of Great Britain's second most famous rock band of all time, trailing only the Beatles in chart-dominating greatness.
The first volume came out decades before the second one did, and served as a standalone Greatest Hits album until the mid-1990s, when the second collection of hits was compiled. The progression of Queen's style is very evident, especially when you pop out the first CD and put in the second. Personally, I like almost all of the first CD, but can't get into the second one past the first few tracks. The second volume contains much of the later hits in the "glam rock" style, while the first CD (containing the hits from the '70s, mostly) has a much more classic feel.
Queen's goal always seems to be writing songs that become so classic that they surpass the world of charts and records and become legends. Often, they've succeeded ("Bohemian Rhapsody," "Somebody to Love," "We Will Rock You"). And even when the songs never seem to slip the surly bonds of earth in the way some of them do, they're always catchy and fun to listen to, especially the early classics. My personal favorites were "Killer Queen" and "A Kind of Magic." (As a Christian, I recommend caution with "Bicycle Race" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" due to unwholesome lyrics.)
Unless you're a devoted Queen fan, you're unlikely to really love both CDs, since the style changes so much over the years. However, all of the songs provide a great look at the work of what is unarguably one of the most talented musical groups ever. The collection is a tad pricey for a music album, but if you like Queen, it's worth it.
Free Music Review: Very late in arriving. Hit: 3 StarsTerrible custormer service. Would NOT use vendor again or recommend to others. However, music is fabulous.
