Free Music Notes for Queens of the Stone Age

Free Music Review: QOTSA's first and greatest
Hit: 5 Stars

In my opinion, Queens of the Stone Age's self-titled debut is the greatest debut album ever, and probably my favorite CD. I still listen to it regularly, unlike lesser CD's that just sit on the shelf next to the stereo collecting dust. This album is true rock, with songs ranging from the heavy-metal sound of "Regular John" and "Avon," to the bluesy sound of "Walkin' On The Sidewalks" and "I Was A Teenage Hand Model." Every song on this CD sounds different from the one before it, and each one has it's own strengths. The songs and my reviews for each are:

1) Regular John (10/10): Starting out quiet, this song explodes with loud guitar riffs and drumming. The vocals are great, and this is a perfect opener.

2) Avon (10/10): The opening is very heavy and the guitar riffs are amazing. The different sound ranges are incredible, as is the little drum solo starting at about the 2 1/2-minute mark. The singing is kind of hard to understand, but this song is still just about perfect.

3) If Only (10/10): After the heavy sounds of "Regular John" and "Avon" comes the more poppy-sounding "If Only." The guitars, bass, and vocals are excellent on this song, and even though it's not as heavy as other songs on this album, it's still great. The chorus is good on this song.

4) Walkin' On The Sidewalks (9/10): This song is very raw, and has a bluesy kind of sound to it. The second half is really just instrumental, with heavy guitars and bass. The entire song is good, but it starts to drag towards the end.

5) You Would Know (9/10): Starting out with the sounds of a phone number being dialed along with a cool sounding guitar, this song really does have a "robotic" feel to it. The vocals are great, and the lyrics are funny. The only thing I don't like about this song is the title is repeated seventeen times at the end. It's still a great song though.

6) How To Handle A Rope (10/10): This song starts with heavy fuzz coming from the amplifiers. The guitars and drumming are great throughout. This song is kind of disturbing (it's about killing yourself) but it's still very good.

7) Mexicola (10/10): This is probably my favorite song on this album. Just the bass is playing in the beginning, and it remains prominent throughout, making "Mexicola" one of, if not THE heaviest track on the CD. The drumming and vocals are amazing, and the chorus is great. Everything about this song is perfect.

8) Hispanic Impressions (10/10): Even though this track is purely instrumental, it fits just fine and helps seperate "Mexicola" from "You Can't Quit Me Baby," which both start out with heavy bass playing. The drumming on this song is incredible.

9) You Can't Quit Me, Baby (10/10): With a name almost exactly like a Led Zeppelin song, you'd expect it sound like something from them, but it doesn't. As with "Mexicola," this song starts out with just the bass playing. The bass and drumming continue to be great through the entirity of this song. The lyrics are great (it's a song about being ignored) and this is one of my favorite songs. It starts to speed up towards the end, and keeps getting faster and faster, until it suddenly slows down again and just about stops. All in all a great song.

10) Give The Mule What He Wants (10/10): A great opening guitar riff. All the instruments sound amazing in this song, especially the guitar playing. The lyrics are funny, which is hinted at by the title. This song is a little too short in my opinion, but it still rocks.

11) I Was A Teenage Hand Model (10/10): What can I say other than WOW! This song is amazing. It isn't nearly as heavy as the rest of the album, but it has an eerie, soulful sound to it. The piano and vocals are excellent. The only thing I don't really like about this song is at the end when it gets shrill and very, very loud. Other than that, this is a great closer to an almost perfect album.

OVERALL: 108/110, 98.2%

One of the few albums actually worthy of five stars (it should get five stars just for the cover, lol!), this CD really shows that Queens of the Stone Age is an amazing band with incredible song writing. They're my favorite band of all time, and will continue to be no matter how good or bad they get (the latter, of course, will never happen). I think everyone should go out and buy this great rock album!

Collector's Item. The record described here is one from the legendary LOST PALLET. The mystery has finally been solved: The CD's were discovered in a government warehouse in Seattle right next to the Lost Ark of the Covenant. This is one of the final remaining 8,000 of the original pressing of the classic debut album by Queens of the Stoneage. Brought to you by RekordsRekords in conjunction with Ant Acid Audio. "Nobody brings our music to you better than we do & that's our promise."
Any similarities that Queens of the Stone Age may have to Kyuss are probably inevitable--all three members of this group were in Kyuss at one time or another. The intention of this band, however, is not to create Kyuss 2, but to make its own brand of noise. Falling somewhere between Can and Canned Heat, the trio brings an occasional electronic aura to the guitar-based chug of stoner rock. While not as brash and earsplitting as their previous band (singer-guitarist Josh Homme--a Jack Bruce sound-alike--lays back where Kyuss frontman John Garcia would have yelped), these guys have made a debut album that is nevertheless an intriguing, aggressive, trippy aural journey that bows down to no trend. --Janiss Garza
