Free Music Notes for Songs for the Deaf AlbumFree Music Review: Album of the year? Hit: 5 StarsThis record is a triumph for Queens of the Stone Age. They have finally solidified their line up, with the band now comprising Josh Homme, Nick Olivieri (both original members of the legendary Kyuss), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees). Describing their sound is difficult: the guitars are loud, bass rumbling, vocals by turns melodic or screamed incomprehensibly. Dave Grohl's outstanding drumming has added an entire new dimension to the band though, as has Mark Lanegan's wonderful vocals, although the tracks Homme assumes vocal duties for shine just as brightly. This is an ambitious record, and that fact is apparent from the very first strains of a mock radio show announcing the band. The entire album is held together by segues which satirise wonderfully the hypocrisy and poor quality of commercial radio stations: these are both hilarious and welcome. Opener 'You think I aint worth a dollar....' is a brief aural assault, with Olivieri's trademark screeching dragging us into the record head first. The single 'No one Knows' follows, and this is a marked contrast, a catchy, quirky song with haunting melodies and possible hit potential delivered by Homme. Acroos the entire album the sheer quality of songwriting and musicianship never lets up for a single second: 'First it Giveth', 'God is in the Radio' and 'Gonna leave you' are perfect slices of guitar driven, malancholy pseudo-pop songs, delivered as only this band can. 'The Sky is Fallin' and the incredible 'A song for the deaf' are more ambitious, menacing and progressive, and are two of the standout tracks included here. 'Six Shooter' is a single minute of sheer rage, once again with Olivieri's screech falling over metal music worthy of the heaviest band imaginable. The fact that this is followed by the haunting 'Hangin' Tree' with Lanegan assuming vocal duties for a smooth ballad only serves to highlight the diversity apparent on this record, and the incredible talent of these musicians. Add to this the fact that snatches of Jazz, Mexican guitar, Heavy Metal, 60's pop melodies and Rock n' Roll combine on this record and its unique sound and status is clear. If you enjoyed 'Rated R', the band's previous outing, you should tear yourself away from the computer immediately and purchase this album: you will not be dissapointed. If you didnt like 'Rated R', if you dont enjoy QOTSA, this advice still stands: this album really is indispensable for any music fan. I have never heard anything quite like this, or anything quite as good. Utterly incredible.
