Free Music Review: One More Time
Hit: 3 Stars

Well, since Styx, Rush, and Def Leppard released their tribute album of covers, I guess it was about time Queensryche did the same. I always find it interesting when bands do the cover thing. You never know what to expect and you always compare it to the original. If the original is outstanding and has been a radio staple it's going to be pretty difficult to out do it. And this is probably the case here. While Queensryche might have wanted to give their fans something to listen to before their next new release of studio material in 2008, I wonder if it's really worth it. Is this going to be on everyone's playlist all the time? This suffers, as has their recordings since the departure of DeGarmo. DeGarmo just added something to the band and without him it is an uphill climb, to be sure. While there really aren't any stand-out tracks on this, it's just another collection of covers that you could probably do without unless you're the die-hard Queensryche fan. Geoff Tate singing Freddie Mercury or Sting. Some songs just shouldn't be touched, no matter how much they influenced you. I think Tribe was their best in the post DeGarmo era, but sometimes you have to wonder if the band actually even listens to what they've recorded before releasing it. Wait until this cd comes up used and, maybe, purchase it then, but in the meantime, hopefully the 2008 release will be better than Mindcrime II (a disastrous album).

Free Music Review: A good cover album
Hit: 3 Stars

Being a big Queensryche fan, I rushed out to buy this CD while I was home for R&R from the desert. I enjoyed most of the songs on this album, although For The Love of Money should've been left off mostily because I really hate that song in every form I have ever heard it. I mean, really hate it. Most band's feel a need to do a covers album, starting way back in the early 60's where everyone was covering someone, to include the Beatles and The Stones.
Operation Mind Crime Two was also not bad, it took 4 or 5 times listening to it before I started to like it, the worst part though was ending it with a ballad. I usually stop listening to it when Fear City Slide is done, since I feel is where it should've stopped.
Back to the Covers Album, it is a good album, not by far the best the 'Ryche has ever done, but worth a listening to.

Free Music Review: Take Cover... Or Run For Cover?
Hit: 3 Stars

The good news... this is a decent inbetween disc from the Ryche for the die hard fans... Geoff is in good voice and the song selection is varied. The price? $7.99 in download from Amazon... NICE!!!

The bad... some real missteps in picking songs in the theatrical territory like Innuendo and Odissea ... It's obvious Geoff isn't feeling the arrangements as well as he could, and the heavy handed GOTTA BE METAL!!!! music behind him doesn't help him out at all ... you are allowed to not be ALL METAL all the time... lighten up... serve the songs... see Def Leps cover of Waterloo Sunset... and who mixed this mess? The vocals are often buried and it's extremely heavy handed ... it often sounds like a rough mix or a live to two track mix... woof ... whoever their engineer was should have been SHOT.

Free Music Review: Better than expected
Hit: 3 Stars

I had low expectations for this album but it surprised me. Welcome to the Machine is a great arrangement. Great versions of Synchronicity II and Red Rain. All the songs are well done except Innuendo and Bullet the Blue Sky which keeps this album from being a 5. Innuendo is one of my favorite Queen songs and it didn't come out well. They should have picked another Queen tune (like Hammer to Fall or Sheer Heart Attack). Bullet the Blue Sky drags and it has a painfully lame commentary in the middle. What makes the album a 4 is the cover of Neon Nights. It just ROCKS!

Free Music Review: "Don't Step Outside Of That Box!"
Hit: 3 Stars

Best cut: Heaven On Their Minds - Jesus Christ Superstar would sound great with an updated edge to it and this song proves it.

Worst Cut: For The Love Of Money - Somewhere between a Donald Trump hair cut and a superficial contestant from The Apprentice, pure garbage.

The rest of the cuts are all fair covers of mostly familiar songs, but nothing stands out and grabs you to say "wow they did a great job with that one".
