Free Music Notes for Operation: Mindcrime

Free Music Review: beyond brilliant
Hit: 5 Stars

This is flat-out the best rock album to come out of the eighties. So many great songs on this one, I don't know where to start. My favorites are Revolution Calling (I love the vocals in this one), Operation Mindcrime, The Mission, I Don't Believe In Love, and Eyes Of A Stranger. Think of what an ambitious project this concept album was for a band riding the 80's hair wave. The most amazing thing about this album is that, while it is a concept album and tells a great story, each song is brilliant and fantastic-sounding in it's own right. You can pluck any song off this album and play it individually, and it works. I have the entire Queensryche catalog and like everything they've ever done (especially Rage For Order and Empire) but this is the pinnacle of their career. Anyone who claims to be a fan of good rock and roll must have this album in their collection.

Free Music Review: A True Revolution Not To Be Missed!
Hit: 5 Stars

This was the album that showed everyone outside of their fanbase that Queensryche had what it takes to be one of the greatest bands of all time! This is one of those rare albums where everything clicks and is put together so well that after the last track ends the only word that can come to mind is "brilliant". My personal favorites are Revolution Calling, The Mission, I Don't Believe In Love, and Eyes of a Sranger.
Keep in mind though, this album is telling a story and you have to listen from beginning to end - but you won't mind because every track is a winner and shows the band's diversity - from the title track welcoming you into the Revolution to the haunting Suite Sister Mary to the sadness of Waiting For 22 before the grand finale - this album is a true winner and so far no other band has ever come close to the powerful concept of Mindcrime.

Free Music Review: A fantastic concept-album
Hit: 5 Stars

Queensryche were one of the first bands to play what was later defined as prog-metal when Dream Theater released 'Images and Words'. O:M is IMHO their best record, thanks not only to their fabulous musicianship, but also to the production by Peter Collins, the guy who produced two of the best Rush's records in the eighties ('Hold your fire' and 'Power windows'). For instance, drums sound less agressive than on 'Rage for order' and much more like Neil Peart's drumming on the two previously mentioned Rush records. Vocals sound great, and have never been as good as on this album. The Iron Maiden influence is still present in the vocal tone and in the choirs, but the music is more ambitious. If you like bands mentioned above and don't know anything about QR, O:M is the ultimate QR record to listen to. Play it loud and have fun while listening to it !

Free Music Review: best concept album ever made, from a great band
Hit: 5 Stars

while Tommy and The Wall suffer from being too hard to follow, this album is fairly clear and doesn't suffer from any pretensions. Queensryche have never kicked this much butt, and never did again (though there are good moments on Empire). The story is basically about a guy named Niki who is disillusioned with politics of the era, and joins a sort of terrorist organization that has him kill people. He meets a nun named Mary, and falls in love with her, but she is killed. He goes through a lot of pain, and ends up lonely and confused. The music gives the story a great amount of power, and keeps interest throughout. If you are new to the band you should get this and Empire, they are both terrific albums. You will not be dissappointed, because Queensryche is way better than almost any metal band from the time in terms of intelligent music

Free Music Review: Most Definitely Belongs in Your CD Collection
Hit: 5 Stars

"Operation Mindcrime" ranks up there with the great rock concept albums, such as ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery" and Pink Floyd's "The Wall."

Execution is superb, with complex vocals and guitar work that is both technically and emotionally gripping.

I stumbled onto this album only recently, having seen a one-hour presentation of Queensryche's 1988 "Operation Mindcrime" concert on VH1 Classics. What a stunning surprise! I suppose because of the timeframe (1980s), I was expecting another mediocre hair band with bombastic delivery. I am pleased to write that Queensryche shows immense creativity, musicality, and even genius in this masterwork, performed by excellent musicians obviously dedicated to their craft.
