Free Music Notes for Queensryche - Greatest Hits

Free Music Review: An excellent overview of the ORIGINAL Seattle band
Hit: 5 Stars

Queensryche is one of those bands about whom, when the name is mentioned, people scrunch up their faces and say, "Huh? Who's that?" Queensryche have never been flashy (okay, there was the moussed vampire look in the mid 80's, but hey, that was the cool look back then) and their members stay out of rock-star-like trouble. Instead, they concentrated their considerable talents into making some of the best hard rock records of the past 20 years. A small sampling of their efforts have now been collected on their greatest-hits package.

Queensryche has never been a radio band--their only major chart singles hit was 1991's "Silent Lucidity"--and for the most part their albums are cohesive works rather than the two-good-songs-and nine-fillers released by the vast majority these days. For the Ryche newcomer, "Greatest Hits" is a great introduction to the band's style (which is uniquely their own) and will undoubtedly be the impetus to run out and get the albums! For the diehard fan, it's a good opportunity to hear how Queensryche has evolved over the years, from the Iron Maiden/Judas Priest bombast festival of their 1981 debut EP to the unbelievable 1987 magnum opus "Operation: mindcrime" to the accomplished chops of "Promised Land," the most recent album to be represented on GH.

From their beginning in 1981, Queensryche's trademark has always been the phenomenal voice of lead vocalist Geoff Tate. If you ever wondered what Pavarotti would sound like if he sang metal, Geoff Tate is about as close as you can get. His powerful range is displayed to full effect on this record, although, like the rest of the band, he toned down the operatics as time passed. Still, the first half of the album, which showcases the Ryche's output between 1981--1987, will have initiates shaking their head in awe as Tate effortlessly takes his voice into the unknown.

For the fan, there's not too many surprises. All the songs that the Ryche are best known for are here (although on various message boards they're some nitpicking that some early stuff is not on here, as well as complaints that nothing off their most recent album "Q2K" was included). Happily, the album is exquisitely mastered, so the older songs like "Queen Of The Reich," "The Lady Wore Black" "Warning" and "Take Hold Of The Flame" will have new nuances for longtime fans. For that reason alone, diehards will want to pick this up. If you're not familiar with Queensryche, this is a great introduction to a band who always puts the music first. Or, as the sly "I Am I" puts it, "You can leave now--but I think you'll stay . . . "

Queensryche - Greatest Hits Poster

CD > POPULAR MUSIC > ROCK
It doesn't take very many fingers to enumerate the number of American heavy-metal bands who traversed the treacherously shifting musical tastes of the 1980s and '90s intact and prosperous. And though their multiplatinum days peaked well before contemporaries like Metallica, Queensryche soldiered on, their sound evolving and maturing in remarkably similar fashion; one might argue they lead the way in that regard. Greatest-hits collections are suspect affairs, but this one presents a taut history lesson, documenting the evolution of one of America's most consistently underrated metal outfits from the Judas Priest-clone days of their self-released debut to the heights of Operation: Mindcrime and Empire, and into their equally rewarding '90s output. Along the way, the band managed to pick up an often artsy social conscience as well as an impressive musical range (the quiet dynamics of "Silent Lucidity" being light-years away from singer Geoff Tate's original Halford-esque howl) and a catchy pop sensibility ("Jet City Woman," "Sign of the Times"). Fans will also welcome two bonus tracks, the bluesy "Chasing Blue Sky" and an alternate, full-band version of "Someone Else?" --Jerry McCulley
