Free Music Review: A Queensryche Masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

Rage For Order is, without a doubt, one of Queensryche's best albums. It seems to be typically overlooked (although it's not without its fans) by Queensryche's other albums such as Operation: Mindcrime, Empire, and even The Warning. It was definitely a good thing to see the band play no less then 5 songs from it on their 2005 summer tour, which is what inspired me to review this album.

"Walk in the Shadows" is up to bat first as the opener for Rage For Order. This is one of my all time favorite Queensryche tracks, and has been ever since I first heard it. A song like "Walk in the Shadows" is what makes me a fan of metal in the first place: hard hitting riffs and incredible solos. Topped off, of course, by Geoff Tate and the rest of the band's fine performances.

Not to mention the fact that Rage for Order has some of the best production I've ever heard, hands down. This is how an album should be mixed. I'm going by the 2003 remaster, which to my ears, is one of the most sonically pleasing albums I own. Every instrument is crisp, clear, and the levels are where they need to be at the right time. This album sounds good on any system its played in.

"I Dream In Infrared" is the first song that has a sort of futuristic/cyber theme in it. For the most part, that theme is pretty darn cheesy, especially when it comes from the 80's. Ignoring it will make this song much more listenable. Geoff Tate delivers a fine vocal performance on this song. I Dream also showcases another one of Queensryche's finer points: their ability to craft songs with a lasting hook, without being completely commercial (not that they don't do that too, the obvious example being O:MC's "I Don't Believe In Love").

Following "I Dream In Infrared" is current tour opener (and previous tour opener) "The Whisper". Frankly, I prefer this song live, although it still rocks here. Another awesome riff starts off this song. More dueling solos. I don't really care for Geoff Tate on this song. His singing, while good, is just too over the top for me to listen to this song often without getting annoyed. An interesting choice for a tour opener too - a brave one, really, considering the register of the vocals.

"Gonna Get Close To You" is a cover song. This song makes me think of really bad 80's movies, thus it's not going to garner much positive attention from me. Gonna Get Close To You is a tad creepy too; I'm glad it's a cover song, otherwise I'd be wondering a little bit...

"The Killing Words" is a bit more commercial sounding, it's in the vein of "I Dream In Infrared". Starts off with some acoustic guitar, and then crescendos. This song really works well, it's definitely catchy.

"Surgical Strike" is a faster paced rocker with some decent riffing and performances from the band. There's not much too say about this song, except it could benefit from a reduction in cheesy 80's keyboards.

"Neue Regel" is another Queensryche classic. I am so disappointed I missed most of this song on their tour this summer (thank God for boots). This song starts off like a lot do on this album, with a sort of eerie vibe. It builds into a very catchy chorus. More great guitar solos. I really feel that the duo of Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton on this album, and Operation: Mindcrime (and to a lesser extent the other QR albums) rivals all other metal duos including Maiden and Priest. This song is another example of their playing proficiency and ability as songsmiths.

I still cannot get into "Chemical Youth (We Are Rebellion)". It's just weird, right down to the title. It's very 80's too (although a lot of this album is...) I really have nothing to say about this song, except I usually skip over it.

"London" continues the catchy Queensryche choruses. It also features some lovely 80's keyboards - with some exceptions I find the overly 80's features of this album, such as the keyboards, and drum reverb, are not overbearing, although I'm sure they would definitely be a turnoff for some people. "London", yet again, has some really memorable guitar work.

"Screaming In Digital" is hands down a favorite song of mine. It is really much better live right now though. It's heavier, less 80's, and Geoff really nails the scream at the end of it. That being said, this song has some really cool riffing (I love to play this song) and terrific solos (and Kelly Gray and Mike Stone really need to learn how to play it!)

"I Will Remember" closes the album. It likes to get compared to "Silent Lucidity" which is mostly fair. This song has a much more eerie atmosphere (the whistling!) to it. I love listening to this one in the car at night. I'm just weird like that. This song is a perfect closer to this album. Some beautiful acoustic guitar work here.

Rage For Order, once it overcomes its 80's and cheese issues, manages to be one of Queensryche's finest albums. A true metal classic, that is oft overlooked. If you don't have it, I really recommend you pick it up. It is, in many respects, as good as Operation: Mindcrime, and if you like the style of O:M, you're almost sure to like this.

Rage for Order Poster

Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve and includes four bonus tracks. EMI. 2008.
Queensryche's third album shows an increasing musical maturity that would come to full bloom in the subsequent Operation: Mindcrime. The material is more complex, blurring the line between progressive rock and heavy metal. Though some of the songs sound dated and a little overwrought, this can be forgiven given when Rage was recorded. And there is some great stuff here: you won't hear "Gonna Get Close to You", "Chemical Youth", "I Will Remember", or "Screaming in Digital" on the radio, but they're definitely worth listening to. As to the band photos on the back of the CD, just remember that there was a time when that look was cool. -- Genevieve Williams
