Free Music Notes for At the Kabuki TheatreFree Music Review: Performance pretty inspired, recording primitive...... Hit: 3 Stars
Back around the time this was recorded, Stereo Review magazine was publishing some fabulous monthly reviews of contemporary music, written by Mr. Steve Simels. Back in that analog age, it was necessary to divide the review into two pieces, the quality of the music and the quality of the actual recording. The recording here, most of the time, sounds like it was done on a battery powered mini reel to reel, and occasionally spliced together from different source tapes! Jarring changes in volume and tone, muffles, etc. As to the music, the first CD is pretty doggone inspired, rocks on very well, maybe the liveliest version of "You're Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond" (mis-typed as "Band") I ever heard. Dino Valente's distinct high lonesome vocals, solid drumming, driving guitars, etc. The second disc is generally painful with a few bright moments, but mostly dispensable.

Free Music Review: "This is KMPX San Francisco" Hit: 3 Stars
Quasi boot taken off Bay Area FM radio broadcast - some great tunes, some less so - Dino's voice and John again way back in the mix.
Sound is slightly mediocre, but much better than some other real QMS boots like a 67 NYE concert I own. That one is unlistenable.
"Call on Me" starts out like a horrid out of tune song, but boys "kind" of salvage it. "Pride of Man" is unchanged, a lovely dino-saur.
The extra songs on disc two were later added to the "Castles in the Sand" CD, put out about a year ago. That is much more interesting recording than this concert.
Three and a half stars - glad I got it, though.
I wonder what is in Wolfgang's Vault?
Free Music Review: Horrible sound quality; OK performance Hit: 2 Stars
This is a radio broadcast from a 1970/1 concert. The concert part is about one hour and forty five minutes, and there is about 20 minutes of rehearsal material.
The sound quality is pretty bad. The origin of the tapes used is not given, but I would guess it came from someone's recording off of the radio. You do get to hear the radio station DJ calling out the station's call letters at the end of What About Me "this is KMPX in San Francisco".
The sound is fuzzy, there is no dynamic range and the high end is screachy, like a broken speaker. The sound quality is also uneven. The rehearsal material is better, which makes me think it came from a different source.
This is could be considered the "original" line-up of the band: Elmore, Cipollina, Duncan and Freiberg, with Valenti. Between the first album (which Valenti missed because he was in jail) and this concert, the band went through a number of changes, including having Nicky Hopkins in the band at one point. This concert is shortly after all the originals came back together.
The band is more dominated by Dino Valenti, but they play many of the older songs at this concert. It is about 50/50 Valenti vs. old stuff. There is a lot of good jamming. But, there are a lot mediocre songs.
The biggest problem is that the marginal songs become unlistenable due to the sound quality. The sound problems impact the vocals the most. It is just an unpleasant experience listening to the vocals.
The sound quality is not quite as bad on some of the jams. It is good enough that they are actually enjoyable. I am going to just edit out the good sounding parts and get rid of the CD.
Some of the songs are still fairly good, such as the hits, Fresh Air and What About Me. They are extended and the sound quality of the vocals isn't as bad as on some other songs.
If you like Quicksilver, you should check out the Welsh band Man. John Cipollina plays on thier album, Maximum Darkness. On a later live album, the play a Quicksilver song and Deke Leonard talks about Cipollina. He says "why does it always have to be the good ones. Why couldn't it have been Phil Collins, instead?" (but I actually like Phil Collins).
Free Music Review: Live At Kabuki Hit: 2 Stars
I love QMS. I am lukewarm about Dino Valenti. But everything else about them is great. This recording is obviously taken from a radio broadcast. The music may have been good but the sound quality is very ordinary. Greatdul Dead have shown that old tapes can be cleaned up to provide listenable recordings. No one bothered with this one. Unfortunately.
