Free Music Notes for Accelerate

Free Music Review: What a great record!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the best thing by REM in
a long time. Just short, quick
and tight rock and roll songs.
Hard charghig like good old
rock songs that end fast and
tight and dot't fade out.
NEAT STUFF!!!

Free Music Review: REM's Back Again
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of REM since the beginning of this band, and the sound this band has played on every new CD is always surprising. This is no exception to that. REM is again with music & letters that are always critical with these world We are living in. I'd recommend it, without any doubt.

Free Music Review: I guess Berry WAS the key to the band's success--this ain't MONSTER
Hit: 2 Stars

Everybody seems to have gotten excited about the guitars, but lyrically, this band is pretty confused and seems to have lost the ability to write coherent songs.

Michael's voice sounds fine but for the most part, the lyrics and melodies are either forgettable or simply "moon/June/spoon."

Because the band has struggled so much since Berry left, I think the secret is out that he WAS the band, otherwise they would have carried on from heights to heights.

At only 35 minutes, this short CD is best purchased used (as I did) and we can only wait for the next R.E.M.-- maybe Berry will return and help with the songwriting?

Free Music Review: best post-berry album
Hit: 5 Stars

After a few listens, I am intrigued by the liveliness of the album. Perhaps it is not on par with other classics (e.g. Murmur, Automatic for the People), but Accelerate is not far from it.

Free Music Review: REM- The BAND Returns
Hit: 4 Stars

Having read a good number of professional and pseudoprofessional reviews I was convinced to add my two cents.

Those looking for an artistic statement on the level of Reckoning or Document or AFTP are going to be rudely disappointed. Accelerate just doesn't get there. It's not even as cohesive or dramatic a band piece as Monster. But it DOES represent the band getting their chops back and rediscovering the fun of live music, albeit on tape (or however they burn masters nowadays).

Those looking for melody and hooks will also be somewhat disappointed, but the sheer VERVE these fellas bring to the table for this outing is really cool. After Around the Sun (and into the crapper) I figured we were doomed to yet another Stipe solo album- then Accelerate.

Things I missed in the previous 3 cd's- Mills' harmony, Mills' bass (catch the first two songs- man he sounds like the reincarnation of John Entwhistle)(a good thing), the jangle of Buck's guitar, and the guttural passion of Mikey himself.

It's like Stipe woke up sometime during 2006 or 2007 and thought "Man, I AM getting older but man I LOVE to rock and roll."

Nice call, guys. Four big, appreciative stars. You did good.
