Free Music Review: I've arrived late for this party

So, for several years I've neglected to get this compilation. Several factors have contributed to this: I lost interest in REM around the time of their Out Of Time album; I bought various of their later albums, and they didn't 'click' for me, though they may be fine; various reviewers here have talked about the mastering of this album as if it rendered the cd's unlistenable; I may have just forgotten. Then today I saw it at the friendly neighborhood cd store, I had the cash, and figured I would chance it. I got home, put on disc two, and was totally entranced for the next 3 hours. I've heard a lot of rare recordings by this band, and figured (for some reason) that this would be just more of the same, in terms of versions, sequencing and the like. The songs are great, the mastering is fine, the sequence is killer, and I have been transplanted back to my youth in the best possible way. Now I'm listening to disc one for the second time, after hearing disc 2, like, 3 or 4 times in a row. Rarely has a cd grabbed me like this, but dang, this baby's got me! I wish now I'd heard it when I met P Buck at the Robyn Hitchcock show a couple of months ago. I would have been a lot more enthusiastic towards him. By the way, REM fans, Buck's playing in support of Mr Hitchcock was fabulous. So anyways, back to this here document. The cd is great, don't let the negative talk deter you if you're even a little tempted. If you can get this affordably, DO IT! You will not regret. This is an absolute classic compilation of a great band. Now I hope I can find the DVD companion soon.....

The songs collected on And I Feel Fine... The Best of The I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 are just good enough to render the previous I.R.S. years collection, 1998's Eponymous, officially dead. The latter was likely the way the masses heard R.E.M.'s underground hits on CD the first time--after all, the band had just come off of their apocalyptic breakthrough single ("It's the end of the world...") and CD players were finally hitting below the $400 mark. It did the trick. We all got up to date and it paved the way for a more sonic R.E.M. to grow into the phenomena they've become. This new version is a welcome history re-write as it pulls more from Murmur and Reckoning days and does a far better job at telling the early story--owing a great deal to the photos and in-depth notes from Anthony DeCurtis.
For our money it's worth $2 to buy the "Collectors Edition" for the massive collection of rarities on disc 2. The DVD companion to this CD is a visual goldmine. --Peter Hilgendorf
