Free Music Review: R. Kelly - Double Up
Hit: 3 Stars

Damn, i am so dissapointed with this album. I was expecting so much more from this legend. I knew he was talking about adding some Hip Hop flavor to this album, but i didnt know he was going for a pretty much bonafide Hip Hop album. I was hoping for a R&B album with at least ten true R&B baby making tracks like we are used to from R., and maybe five or six hip hop tracks that we can bump to. But what i got instead was a 80% hip hop, 20% R&B album where most of the rap tracks are boring, and the same can be said with the R&B tracks. R. Kelly can make the best R&B music in the world. So why would he try and make a rap album? He is know for his unmistakable slow jams and flawless mid tempo love songs, so why change your formula of success? TP.3 Reloaded, had a good balance of legitimate R&B music and great Hip Hop music. But with this album, he did WAY to much rap music, and not enough of what hes known for. Now there were some good songs on this album such as the sampled, mid tempo club rap song "Double Up" with another legend Snoop Dogg. And then there is the absoulutely sweet mid tempo baby maker "Sweet Tooth", which is the perfect name for the song because of its sugary appeal. And then big hit singles "I'm A Flirt" & the Usher assisted "Same Girl", and the minor rock hit "Rock Star" which is definetly a party starter. But other than that and the mid tempo answering machine song "Leave Your Name", everything else is dissposable. Seriously, i dont think i have ever said that about an R. Kelly album, but this album was definetly a mistake in some areas. Why does he insist on doing all that street stuff? If he just stuck to what hes good at, he would be selling so much more. This is an album the younger teens would be attracted to. Because even the rap songs he does on this album, are just generic lets party rap songs. There is no substance. Its an album full of radio rap. And if i wanted pop rap, i would buy Nelly, but because i am a huge R. Kelly fan, i bought this but i was very dissapointed. It's not a terrible album, but coming from Kells i expect alot better. Double Up, and his legendary album TP2.Com seem like two different artists. If only that classic slow jam R&B would come back, the world would be such a better place. Bottom line, I expect better out of Kells, thats all.

Free Music Review: Double Up = Double Flop
Hit: 3 Stars

It's impossible not to be in two minds about Double Up. It presents us with a reinvented, thuggish ruggish version of R. Kelly, who is reaching, following...not leading the pack as he so claims on 'The Champ'. Even so, this man is so talented that he can't help but impress us on occasion.

There are some GREAT songs here, like the sexy, swaggering title track, 'Freaky In the Club', with its cool reggae tones, 'I'm A Flirt' which is outrageously cocky and fun, 'Same Girl', 'Real Talk' which is an arresting, dramatised, one-sided conversation with R. Kelly's lover who accuses him of cheating, and 'Hook It Up'.

The rest of the songs teeter between disastrous and forgettable. Nelly didn't even have the right to be in the same room as R. Kelly, let alone record with him...and the same could well be said for Chamillionaire. I understand that this album was recorded in 2007, and that by then, hip hop was so pervasive that R. had to do what he had to do to stay relevant, but perhaps he could have atleast been more discerning when choosing rappers. 'The Zoo' is an amazingly embarrassing song about wanting to get 'wild' with a girl, literally. 'Sex Planet' is similarly embarrassing, which is a shame because it could have been a decent slow jam. 'Sweet Tooth' is forgettable, making this album devoid of quality slow jams -- what a thought!

I stand by R. Kelly as one of the greatest talents of our time, though this album doesn't convey that very often. Here's to the next album, and let's hope he lifts his 'game'.

Free Music Review: The Champ is not necessarily back :-l
Hit: 3 Stars

I love R Kelly, - I have every cd of his, but this was a bit of a let down. I'd been so looking forward to it, and yet after listening to it a couple of times, I can't find too many favourite stand out songs here.
The four I do like are Rock Star (my favourite), S*x Planet and Rise Up (dedicated to the people of Virginia in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings). That song is beautiful and powerful, and catchy too. Probably the most fun and cool track is I'm A Flirt (with T-Pain). That's one of the best tracks on the cd. There's a good song called Same S*x with Usher and that's Ok, but overall I just didn't find anything special here. So many songs about the clubs and the after parties and the hotel lobby, but nothing too majorly stand-out-ish. The Zoo is probably one of the more bizzare songs with all kinds of animals doing 'background vocals'. The 19 track is a five second blank piece - which I don't understand.
Overall, I was a bit disappointed. I'd been hanging out for this for so long now, and it's the first real disappointment to me from R Kelly who to me is usually the King. I don't know what happened here, but don't rush out to get this; wait till you can get your hands on a used copy maybe. Sorry.

Free Music Review: Disappointing Compliation
Hit: 3 Stars

This new album compares nothing to that of TP-3, this album is laced with nothing that represents R&B. He is singing in the style reminiscent of rapping. He seems to be drunk, unhappy, fighting, and targeting this album for clubbers, gangstas, and relationship phobics.

R. Kelly usually has more love music, he seems to be very anger about something. I understand club music is what needs to be achieved for record sales, but this album could have been revamped to bring out the R.Kelly that his true fans would buy. This is 21 year old music coming from a veteran in the music game.

I expected more from Robert. It is disappointing and typical of him as of lately. Joe came with a true R&B album. If he is crossing over to reach a certain demographic, then I'd rather not listen. Musiq killed him with all the ballads and even uptempo jams. He needs to go back in the studio and reassess his focus back to Robert and let thug R.Kelly crawl back up under a rock.

Free Music Review: Pretty Good
Hit: 3 Stars

I dig the title track alot with Snoop Dogg on Board. Dizzy Head and Dizzy legs line cracks me up. I dig Freaky in the club that is a Jam. the Zoo is a smooth Jam. and Real Talk is my cut. MILTON!! I like that shoutOut right there. the Background vocals on this Album are good and the string Arrangements by Larry Gold are cool as well. not any Knock me out Cuts per se,but a Good Balance of Versatility that is always on a R.Kelly album. very well Produced set. the Album is Entertaining and has interesting moments.
