Raq's third studio release, Ton These, features strong playing by the band and showcases their maturing songwriting. The disc includes live favorite "Bootch Magoo," the excellent "Said and Done," and ten other songs.
Guitarist Chris Michetti and keyboardist Todd Stoops have muted their chops somewhat on this disc, as opposed to Raq's second disc, Carbohydrates, which features much more shredding. Carbohydrates appealed to me immediately, while Ton These has been more of an acquired taste. Both are more polished than Raq's debut, Shed Tech, which featured Marc Scortino on keyboards. Carbohydrates is still my favorite, but I think all their discs are worth having.
Raq claim Frank Zappa as a prime influence, and you can hear that in some of their songs. However, they've tried to avoid comparisons to Phish for some reason. Both are 4-piece bands that formed in Vermont. Both played at Nectar's. Both appeal to jam band fans, and the list of similarities goes on. Ton These was recorded at Trey Anastasio's Barn Studio, so perhaps Raq is finally conceding that Phish had a lot to do with their sound. I don't consider the Phish influence to be a bad thing at all. Raq is clearly not copying Phish - they're not a tribute band or something like that. But the influence is definitely there just the same.
If you like complex jams, songs that tell stories, and musicians with wit and great technical ability, I recommend Ton These, but make sure you don't miss out on Raq's earlier discs. Better yet, go out and see a show.
