Free Music Notes for Hi InfidelityFree Music Review: side one rules Hit: 4 StarsREO Speedwagon have an interesting lead singer who is most definitely an acquired taste. You will either like his bizarre style or you won't. I like it. I think it was especially good in the early days. With this album, released in 1980, REO Speedwagon find great success, and some of these songs can still be heard on the radio today, in 2007. Of course, "Keep on Loving You" has been played thousands of times through the years, but I still love it to pieces.
"Take It On the Run" is a pretty strange song the way the vocal melody almost sounds like it's overlapping. "Heard it from a friend who, heard it from a friend who". It's not, though. "Don't Let Him Go" is my pick for favorite song. Great, speedy rocker with very good vocals. In fact, the guitar playing throughout the album is a highlight for me, seeing as how it's melodic most of the time. I find it funny how so many people make fun of this band for being cheesy, and yet, the guitar playing is almost heavy metal-like.
Unfortunately side two features a few short rockers that apparently the band thought would be worth putting on the record. These rockers are almost like an updated version of 50's rockers. They're okay, but nothing memorable about them worth giving a second notice to.
Overall, it's a good listen, for a pretty good band.
Free Music Review: Classic Hit: 5 StarsI was a senior in high school when this album was released. Twenty seven years later, I'm an old man, but this album still rocks. The vocals on 'Keep on Loving You' are truly remarkable. It's cliche, but they don't make music like this anymore.
Free Music Review: fantastic record Hit: 5 StarsI heard "take it on the run" for the first time when I was about [...] and was starting to really enjoy and understand music. Bought my first album..HiInfidelity....And since that day, and with thousands of records and CDs now to my credit, HiInfi remains one of the best and purest recordings of this great American Rock and Roll band.
REO was then and is still the hardest working, day to day, never broken up to just have a cheesy reunion, touring every year rock band there is out there.
If you like HiInfi...look into the latest REO accomplishment, "Find your own way home". The initial release came with a CD that has HiInfi recorded live from front to back, complete with a retro looking old, but new cover of the album (the way my original one looks).
The new CD is fantastic...but the Live version of this entire CD is a must have. May REO continue to provide us with great american music year after year for years to come.
Free Music Review: Good melodic rock Hit: 3 StarsThis album, an unashamed project directed to girls, has the weight and punch of a paper leaf and the agressivenness of a nun.
Anyway, this is the quintessential album by Speedwagon and if you choose to have only one album of them, this is the one to get.
The songs have strong hooks and catchy choruses, altough there are some fillers.
Free Music Review: Phenomenally popular in its day, and still excellent... Hit: 5 StarsThis is actually a great album. REO Speedwagon was a decently successful band until this album put them in the major rock star territory. They had toured (and toured) for years, having modest success until the "Tunafish" album, which went gold. Then this album came along, and they became superstars. This is a fantastic album, one of those rare albums that was amazingly popular and excellent musically. Almost every song a classic. The only song that is disappointing is Someone Tonight (bassist Bruce Hall's contribution). I'm trying to think of my favorite song here, and I can't, because I like them all, but there's one in particular that I'll talk about. I've always liked the album's closer, I Wish You Were There. It's the least known song on the album, which is a shame. The lyrics for it are pretty ordinary, but Kevin Cronin's vocal is so passionate and uplifting it makes the song so majestic and moving. I've always really loved it. Sadly, REO's career both began and ended with this album, as they made a few more albums, none of which were very good. Now they've splintered off into various factions. It's a shame, but this is still great music....
