Free Music Review: Nothing short of Brilliant
Hit: 5 Stars
Former S Club memner Rachel Steven's returns with her sophomore album "Come and Get it". While the album's singles "Negotiate with love", "so good" and "i said never again (But here we are)" frustratingly failed to be the major pop hits they should have been they indicative of the synth heavy, dancefloor ready album that Rachel has crafted.
80s New wave and Electro are the two main sounds that dominate the album. Here is a track by track review.
01 So Good - Electro heavy dancefloor stomper. This was the second single and made UK #10.
02 I said never again (but here we are)- A fantastic upbeat pop track. Opening up with a shouty bit "One! Two! Three! Four!" this song should have done better than UK #12. Im stunned this track didnt catch on.
03 CRazy Boys- Richard X produced this track which is somewhat of a departure from his trademark club sound. The track here features a chugging beat and a escalating erasure sounding keyboard. Rumoured to be the 4th single.
04. I will be there - The albums ballad if it can be called that. Opening with an electronic beat and a analog sounding keyboard the song plods along until it explodes into the chorus in which Rachels sings "Is it okay if I meet you in Heaven? Is it alright if Im with you forever?" all awash in layers of beautiful synths and the ever perisistant beat. Gorgeous!
05. Negotiate with Love - The album's first single and arguable one of the weakest tracks. The song scrapped into the UK top ten but failed to do it job of getting people excited about the new project. The song sounds like an old Blondie track complete with new wave keyboards and a little guitar thrown in. A great album track but probably a poor single choice.
06. Its all about Me - Rachel singles about a broken realationship on a track that could have easily been a throwaway track from her "funky dory" album. I dont know why but it sounds like there is a Cure sample in this song. An okay song.
07.Secret Garden - In a weird high pitched voice Rachel gets retro 80s on this track.The music sounding like a bit like Dannii Minogue on her Neon Nights album complete with a keyboard bit ripped from Parliament Funkadelic.
08. Nothing Good about this Goodbye - Arguably the standout track on the album. Rachel is once again in Electroclash land again but the chorus is so damn catchy its hard to ignore. Her vocals sound slightly altered but it all works. With its cool club sounds and great synths this song is worth buying the album. Should be a single.
09. Some Girls - The Richard X track that many claim "Saved" rachel's career (although now it may look like it just postponed the inevitable). A huge hit in the UK it sounds like the DR Who theme song mixed with harsh beats underneath it. AWESOME!
10. Je M'apelle - A rather boring track that could easily have been a Britney Spears song. A hip-hoppish beat and some flat vocals make this one of the leats interesting songs on the album.
11. Funny How - Cool electronic noises and a steady beat make this a fun pop song. The chorus reminds me a bit of Pet Shop Boy's "I'm not scared". Rachel sings "The night got cold, its almost three-take these fools away from me" which is reminds me of "take thse dogs away from me" on the PSB songs. A good song.
12.Every Little THing - This song sounds like an S Club song (think "You" or "Natural") with a slightly clubbier edge to it.
13.Dumb Dumb - Opening up with a sample of M.A>R.R.S. collosal 80's dance hit "Pump up the Volume" a cool beat and synths come in to make this a fun new wave sounding song. The title "dumb dumb" is actually kinda cool as the chorus goes "And all she wants is dum de de dum" which could either be nonsensical lyrics or the word dumb repeated over and over.
Overall a solid album and one that should have done better than it has. Fans of great pop music would defiently enjoy this- a brilliant album for thos whole like upbeat dance-pop.
