Free Music Review: An Exciting Rachmaninoff Third

Van Cliburn's performance of Rachmaninoff's third piano concerto came soon after he returned from his triumph at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. Cliburn had wowed the Russian judges and audiences; faced with the prospect of awarding the top prize to an American (at the height of the Cold War), the judges asked Premier Nikita Khrushchev what to do. He asked them if Cliburn had given the best performance and they said "yes," so he told them to go ahead and give the prize to the young American. Later, when Cliburn returned to the Soviet Union, Khruschev came to see and hear him play; the premier can actually be seen in videos of the performance and he was clearly impressed with Cliburn.

The remarkable thing about the April 1958 performance in Carnegie Hall was that the Russian conductor Kiril Kondrashin, who had led the Moscow Philharmonic when Cliburn played at the competition, came to the U.S. to lead the Symphony of the Air. Those unfamiliar with that orchestra, which is heard in this recording, will be amazed to learn that it was originally organized by musicians who had played in the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini, from 1937 to 1954. The orchestra initially performed without a conductor, but Leopold Stokowski soon became the de facto music director and conducted the musicians in concerts and recordings.

One suspects there hadn't been a lot of rehearsal time with Cliburn, Kondrashin, in the orchestra, because some of the playing is a bit ragged. The French horns are especially rough in the finale. Overall, the orchestra rose to the occasion and provided more than adequate accompaniment for the dazzling concerto. This concerto was undoubtedly the most difficult of the four that Rachmaninoff composed; even the composer found he had written a particularly challenging solo part and he often said the best recorded performance was that by Vladimir Horowitz back in 1930.

Rachmaninoff probably would have smiled at Cliburn's virtuoso performance. Little wonder that RCA chief David Sarnoff, who was present at the concert, insisted that the concert be released by RCA Victor on LP in "Living Stereo" Sarnoff even wrote an introduction to the recording, which was printed on the back of the original jacket. Over the years, Cliburn's performance has been reissued a number of times. Thanks to digital reprocessing, we can hear even more of the memorable, historic occasion.

Cliburn also worked occasional with Walter Hendl, who was the American-born conductor who served as Fritz Reiner's assistant at the Chicago Symphony. Cliburn's collaborations with the Chicago musicians, with both Hendl and Reiner, are among his best recorded performances.
