Free Music Review: Lang Lang the "Scriptible" pianist

Coming from a literary background (I work on 20th century French minority literature), I am appalled by the connservatism, pettiness, and close-mindedness of some music critics. They feel threatened by any new interpretive attempt and categorically reject changes, failing to see that they could open up numerous aesthetic and affective possibilities. In literature, we do not even talk about author's intent anymore!
I had the privilege to hear Lang Lang live, and was riveted by his delightful music. Lang Lang is best at highlighting the internal tensions of a work like this one, and at exciting the audience to experience the narrative's many images and plots. Moreover, I think Lang Lang is able to achieve what Barthes calls a "scriptible" (writable, as opposed to "lisible," or readable) text, which allows the reader to complicate the all too familar codes of language (and in Lang's case, of music). "The future of classical music" may be DG's marketing hype, but perhaps one can appreciate the risks he has taken so far to make classical music relevent again in this postmodern world.
