I own both recording of Rachmaninov's Vespers; the 1st recording conducted by Valery Polyansky with the Russian choir "USSR Ministry of Culture Chamber Choir" & the 2nd recording conducted by Robert Shaw with the American choir "Robert Shaw Festival Singers". Its amazing how the cultural origin effects the style & recording. The American CD is far superior in DDD recording technology by Telarc with fantastic solo singers through out, highlighted by tenor Karl Dent during the song "Now Let Thy Servant Depart", yet the music lacks a cohesive whole or unity of purpose. Could the American Dream of Individualism divide the choir? This is where the Russian choir is it's antithesis: They sing more like a choir, balancing each other in tonality to create shear spiritual beauty. Even if the recording was done during the Soviet era in 1986, the choir remembers their Orthodox spiritual roots. The solos are not as strong as the American recording, yet weep out from among their fellow Russians returning to what was lost, only to refound in the 1990's with the fall of communism. The Russian recording by Moscow Stuudio Archives is not as up front as the American recording, you will have to turn up the volume to hear the quiet sections. Maybe because I have a professional stereo system which reveals all the flaws in a recording. If the Russian CD was better recorded & if a few soloists were more par-excellent, you could do without the American recording. Yet with either recordings your in for a fantastic journey.

Mezzo-soprano Irina Arkhipova is one of Russia's most honored vocal artists, renowned throughout the world. She was one of the few Soviet artists who traveled extensively and was thus able to bring the distinguished traditions of the Russian style to opera houses and concert halls on every continent. Mme. Arkhipova has been awarded numerous prizes for her performances and her recordings. She is currently a professor at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.The Vespers (more correctly titled All-Night Vigil) is Rachmaninov's most famous liturgical work, filled with evocative, textured choral writing that quotes liberally from the rich chant of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Valery Polyansky, now making a name for himself as an orchestral conductor, is well versed in choral music and has made several critically-acclaimed recordings of key Russian choral works. A graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, Polyansky studied with Boris Kulikov and Gennady Rozhdesventsky. In 1992 he founded the Symphonic Cappella, a large, flexible, Moscow-based ensemble of choral singers and orchestral musicians.
