Grievance is for those who have never lived this sound and experience. The Radio Dept brings us back to nostalgic era fuzziness and adolescent like mourning of musical sensitivity. They alternate constantly between touchy emotional rescue with cords and whispers to ponder on our once disbelief of rock not having anything new to say. Scandinavian musicality will have you wonder where the rest of pop went: strong tunes, sensible meaning and a very coherent effort to get across a main message: music is HERE ! It is soft, rebellious, understanding, and seducing without never forgetting it is never about how great you can be but how sincere you pretend to be.
It starts out with a purely musical reminder of nostalgia, then involves sweet male vocals and soft strings to pretend being rocky ("A Window") and again adolescent softness with piano breaks and whispers. "The worst taste in music" is boldly suggestive, break beats and cynical lyrics. Everytime is a fuzzyniess party like "What will give". We could go on...but if one group had a streak of sensorial delicacy, this would be it. "Always a relief" takes you over the hills, so endearing and soft with its repetitive cords. It's pop if you want, that seduces and also drills your head for questions. It's easy but not lazy. A sturdy Tom Waits meets The Style Council. Funny tunes meets doubt. It's purely and absolutely gorgeous. The ONE record that you could repeatedly list in your top...one. The ONE record I would take on an Island...if ever that moment came.
