This CD comes with the highest recommendations from maestro McLaughlin, who has written the very appreciative linernotes himself.
At first it might sound like a rather strange project to play Mahavishnu Orchestra's highcharged electrical fusion in the setting of a string quartet. But actually, although perhaps overshadowed by the obvious influences from jazz, rock and indian music, the classical also was part of John's palette. And of course they actually used a string quartet on "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" and a whole symphony orchestra on "Acopalypse".
There is a something magic in the blend of instruments in the stringed quartet, not that I am a big connaiseur of the classical, but I have to say that Beethoven's later String Quartets are among my all-time favorite pieces of music. And obviously the music on this release is coming from the same timeless space.
The selection of music as well as the arrangements are great and everything is infused with both humour and spirit. And, as John emphazises in his notes, a healthy dose of improvisation. And certainly all four are just stunning virtuoses
There seems to be a nice upsurge in interest in John and Mahavishnu's music. With Mahavishnu Project's innovative and inspired take on "Visions..", Colin Towes' Big Band arrangements and now this semi-classical gem.
The prevalent critics' cliche about John is that of the guitarvirtuoso who plays a bazillion notes without content. Completely overlooking his vast qualities as composer. This release shows the complexity and sublety of his music, which is filled with both relaxing introspection, fiery passion and transcendent beauty.
