Free Music Notes for In RainbowsFree Music Review: Return to Form Hit: 5 Stars
When this album was released back in October, 2007 on Radiohead's website for digital download only, I paid 7 British pounds for it. That's equivalent to almost 11 USD. A fare price, I thought. After a few listens, I would have paid twice that amount. I listened to it all that Fall and well into the Winter. This is a most excellent effort from Radiohead. I have enjoyed it as much as "The Bends" and "OK Computer". For me, it's a return to form.
There are no wasted moments, no weak tracks: just primo Radiohead:
15 Step: Really great beat with this. I have a friend that said it's one of the most sexiest songs she has ever heard.
Bodysnatchers: Radiohead rock all the way. The real highlight of this song is the soaring guitars at the 2:08 mark.
Nude: A gorgeous ballad, beautifully written and sung as Thom Yorke floats away with it.
Weird Fishes: Haunting song; this one reminds me of Paranoid Android in its song structure.
All I Need: A really catchy song. Loved it the 1st time I heard it.
Faust Arp: I closed my eyes and could hear the Beatles in this one.
Reckoner: Yorke's falsetto paves the way through this one. Very nice.
House of Cards: Very catchy song, one of the best they've ever done. Love the little bips and bops in this one.
Jigsaw Falling into Place: Yorke sings all the way through this one and it works.
Videotape: Yorke's piano keeps pulsing in this one until the end of the song. A perfect album closing song.
Free Music Review: Radiohead - Focused Again Hit: 5 Stars
Let me start out by saying that this is the best rock album since Arcade Fire's 'Funeral', perhaps even before that. This album's focus is stunning - never presenting more or less than is required. That's not to say that the music is average. In fact, it's some of the best music that Radiohead has ever recorded.
The album may be a little too concise... another good track would've served the album well. But every track on here is killer.
If I had to pick one album that summed up Radiohead, this would probably be the one. You can hear elements from every period in Radiohead's history. There are elements of 'OK Computer' in "Bodysnatchers", 'Amnesiac' in "15 Step", 'Kid A' in "Nude", 'The Bends' in "Jigsaw Falling Into Place"... ect. And some tracks, such as "All I Need" present something completely new. The aforementioned track sarcastically borders on the edge of funk, accompanied by Thom Yorke at his most forthright lyrically. Introducing the second half of the album is "Faust Arp", which is seemingly a musical roadblock. It doesn't last for long, but you'll remember it while you're listening to the rest of the album.
When Radiohead hits on this album, they hit hard. The aggressive strings on "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" seem to pop you in the mouth. A little more than halfway through "Nude", Yorke lets out a yell that will make you feel all the heartache in the world. From the 'denial' in "House of Cards" to being eaten by the worms in "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi", In Rainbows is an album that's hard to forget.
Free Music Review: Give it time..... Hit: 5 Stars
When I first listened to In Rainbows, I was underwhelmed. It was all very safe sounding, but didn't seem to be groundbreaking in any way.
A couple of weeks later I started listening to the album again, and the songs somehow seemed to be deeper and more compelling. My interest and appreciation definitely went up a notch. I started thinking that the album was a nice collection of very good songs, but I still wasn't sensing the cohesiveness I experienced with other Radiohead albums.
I went through another wave of multiple listenings just recently, and I can't believe how much I was missing at first! Every song is a finely polished gem, and I now thoroughly enjoy listening to each and every one. The brilliant arrangements, the high-level musicianship, the sparse yet compelling lyrics- all add up to a very satisfying experience. And now, I experience the album as a cohesive whole, not just a collection of songs.
One thing I really appreciate about the album is the reduced use of synth, and more emphasis on the primary instruments (guitar, bass, drums, voice). This really gives the band an opportunity to show what accomplished musicians they really are. In particular, Phil Selway's drumming is more prominent than usual, and that is a very good thing! On this album, his drumming is imaginative, compelling, and dead-on accurate, propelling the music into new, unexplored territory.
If you don't "get it" at first, give it time. In Rainbows is certainly one of Radiohead's best efforts.
Free Music Review: I'm hoping other music acts follow suit Hit: 5 Stars
There's no excuse to NOT get "In Rainbows", especially considering that the album is being sold for an astonishing $7.99 at the time of this writing and it's quite possibly one of the band's best albums, if not THE best. The album is a fantastic mix of ten songs packaged in a make-it-yourself cd kit (you're gonna need an empty jewel case to put it together and I'm pretty sure some of you have a cd or two that's worth stripping and tossing for it's jewel case) and that's part of the fun of this album, which from the beginning has been an odd event in musical history. Starting out as a download where fans could pay whatever they wanted to get their hands on it, the album finally arrives in it's "physical manifestation". I think what's so good about "In Rainbows" is that it manages to still be experimental yet more accessible than any of their albums since "Pablo Honey". Songs like "15 Step" and "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" grab you immediately in their immediacy while "House of Cards" (my fave track) and "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" allows you to just sit back and really pay attention to the intricacies of the track compositions.
There's really not much more to say than that. I could go into an in depth breakdown of each track but in all honesty, this is an album that should be picked up by anyone who likes great music and doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. I recommend this without reservation to anyone and everyone, even those who only kind of like Radiohead. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: It's All I Need!!! (This is all I need for my music collection) Hit: 5 Stars
Quality of album: This album is simply amazing, words can't describe this masterpiece. You would think that there would be some weak link, one song that you just can't stand, but their isn't one. Of course, that is what Radiohead has been doing for the past two decades (90's and 00's). This album isn't one of those albums that hits you right over your head with its brillance, it's like wine. It really grows on you. It makes you think...
Change?: Radiohead is an alternative of what you commonly hear on the radio. They don't break glass and turn it into something they are not.
Which album is the best?: Many people say this is Radiohead's "Best." It's hard to say... only time would answer that question. The problem simply is you can't compare "The Bends" and "OK Computer" to "Kid A" because of style changes. Radiohead: Rock/ Alt, Jazz/ Electricona, Acoustic, Rock/ Pop, Pop, and a little bit of Blues... What can I say, they are accomplished, it makes me proud of my music: at least someone out there is producing classics that wouldn't wane over time.
Content: "I'm all the days, that you choose to ignore," another great lyric by them. If you are still wondering about the lyrics, they are obviously about how we effect the environment, where we live.
If Radiohead had its own radio station, that radio station would be the greatest! Just imagin... "Karma Police," "Everything in its right place," to "15 Step!"
