Free Music Review: Great recording of a terrific show

This is a terrific cast album, with most of the show recorded intact. Only some dialogue has been omitted. The cast is exceptional, led by Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald and Marin Mazzie. The score is complex, lovely to listen to, painful in places and on the whole quite beautiful. I was lucky enough to be in a production of the show recently and know how difficult a score this is to sing. Get this if you want to hear one of the best Broadway scores in years sung by one of the best casts in years. It's sort of a shame that Lion King beat this show out as best musical at the Tony awards that year. It was definitely a case of flash over substance.Free Music Review: Best Cast Recording of Decade!

Wow---this has to be the best cast recording of the decade! An amazing score combined with gorgeous, talented Broadway voices provides for a thrilling musical experience. I can't think of another musical where each and every song seems to be ten times better than the previous. Highlights include Brian Stolkes Mitchell and Audra McDonald's rendition of "Wheels of a Dream" and Marin Mazzie's gorgeous, powerful vocals in "Back to Before". The Grammys are sure to crown this recording with the award for Best Musical Show Album on February 24th. I was blown away when I saw this on Broadway two weeks ago. I normally don't fall for the over-big Broadway shows like Jeckyl & Whatever, but I was completely taken with Ragtime's bigness. It was absolutely beautiful from beginning to end, making a photographically amazing image at every scene. But the best part about it is that it could have just been the cast in street clothes sitting in chairs singing, and I would have been equally stunned. I knew it was going to be one of my favorite musicals by the next morning, when there was distant music playing offbeat, singing a dream... Get the CD; you won't regret it. I was anxiously awaiting on receiving my CD of RAGTIME. So when it finally came I was not dissapointed. From the very beginning you are captured into the songs and lyrics by the wonderful duo Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. This is what Broadway is all about. With an all star cast, with not a note out of tune you will faal in love with this CD and knowing the music (if you see it live) will make the experience much more enjoyable. This CD captures the magic of the score and the wonderful lyics. Well worth the buy. If you get this you are doing yourself a favor, for this recording is sure to lift you spirits to new heights.Free Music Review: An art lover's dream!

I recently saw the show in Houston and what more can I say . . . I was overwhelmed. I consider myself a Broadway buff, and I have seen many, many musicals. But this was the best since Les Miserables. The music is divine and soulful. The rhythms and chords melt together and linger in your ears like Godiva chocolate. You will be humming them for days. The lyrics are superb and the characters are wise and dynamic. While the composers kept beautiful continuity throughout the show, they also gave each number a unique melody and a life all its own. Once you hear the opening number, you will be hooked for good!
