Free Music Notes for Ragtime - The Musical (1998 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: "Ragtime" Rules!! Hit: 5 Stars
WOW! Is no wonder that the songwriting team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens won the Tony Award for Best Original Score! Always engaging, this soundtrack is a Broadway musical triumph with incedible and moving performances from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Marin Mazzie, and three time Tony winner Audra McDonald. From humerous tracks like "The Crime of the Century", "What a Game!", and "The Show Biz" to emotional tracks like "Your Daddy's Son", "Wheels of a Dream", and "Back to Before", I recommend this CD to any Broadway fan! "Ragtime" rules!!
Free Music Review: Ragtime Delivers Hit: 5 Stars
After seeing television advertisements about Ragtime, I wrote off the show as too "fluffy", knowing nothing about the show whatsoever. However, I happened to be channel surfing one night and came across the PBS special "Creating Ragtime". I lingered and became hooked. "Your Daddy's Son" is the most haunting song on the album, and the most poignant, both musically and lyrically. This musical deserved every award it got at the Tony's and more (Cabaret?! Get real!). An excellent effort here, and this recording is better than the "Songs from Ragtime" recording.
Free Music Review: Wow! This cast recording is amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
The "Ragtime" cast recording is truly one of the most sensational albums in my collection. Having listened to the "Songs from Ragtime" album very frequently, this album took a little time to get used to since many of the lyrics have been altered...and, of course, every song is sung slightly differently. But, overall, I'd say this is an excellent album. At first, I was upset that they had cut "The Show Biz"...but when I heard "Atlantic City", the song that they replaced it with, I fell in love. This album is remarkable in every aspect of the word. Go buy it!!
Free Music Review: One of the Best musicals of the past decade! Hit: 5 Stars
When it opened in Toronto in December of 1996 RAGTIME showed great promise. Now, after some minor tweaking, it arrives on Broadway getting rave reviews and selling out months in advance. This is very fine musical theatre writing with songs full of character insight and plot detail. The cast is - without exception - sensational, and the 2 CD set is very well produced. With a full libretto, one can follow the whole story. Best of all a bonus track: An 8-minute suite of themes from the show in the style of a "Pops" medley. Do not miss this show or this great cast album!
Free Music Review: Fantastic Modern Musical Hit: 5 Stars
Ragtime is a fantastic show, being British i was only able to catch a BBC broadcast of the show when it was at the Piccadilly Theatre in London for a limtied time. i was blown away by the show, its scope an epic quality, the brilliant performances and of course the fantastic score by Flaherty and orchestrations by Brohn. I was compelled to buy the Broadway Album and did so, desperately hoping the recording would live up to the show. It did, and must rank as one of my favourite recordings of a show as it is so complete in its arrangements and all 38 songs are on the cd. a masterpiece!
