Free Music Notes for Ragtime - The Musical (1998 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: The definitive American musical Hit: 5 Stars
First, let me just mention Amazon.com has mixed up the track listings for this recording and the concept album of Ragtime. This is indeed the complete recording, including the full version of "Ragtime," "A Shtetl Iz Amereke," and "Sarah Brown Eyes."
Now then, I have to say that in comparison to the concept recording, the energy from the principles and ensemble on this recording is FAR greater. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald share an on-stage chemistry that translates to the recording and creates a deep meaning behind their numbers together. I suppose the best way to describe Ragtime is that it's a combination of The Music Man, Porgy and Bess, and Rags. It captures the spirit of America on the brink of a new century, mixing historical fact with the glorious fiction of EL Doctorow. Between the white upper class, the immigrants, and the African-Americans, the story is told in reciprocals, and no group overshadows the other two. Through Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens gorgeously expressive music, the stories of Mother, Father, Coalhouse, Sarah, Evelyn Nesbitt, Tateh, Harry Houdini, and the Little Boy are woven into a cultural tapestry much in the same way America was at the time. If I had to pick one musical that has the greatest overall "American feel" to it, Ragtime would win hands down. (Now, as for that little incident at the 1998 Tonys....)
A wonderful musical interpretation of Doctorow's novel and representation of the American spirit lives on in Ragtime, even if the era of Ragtime had run out.
Free Music Review: An Incredible Show Hit: 5 Stars
I think this show is amazing. Absolutely point blank amazing. I am in the show right now and I play the role of Sarah and I can't get enough of Audra McDonald. Amazing. What else can I say? And I am also writing in protest, because there is this extremely stupid person who writes negative reviews about every musical ever. I am very frustrated after hearing their opinion about Ragtime, Wicked, Le Miz, Little Shop, The Scarlett Pimpernel, Phantom of the Opera, Urinetown, Once on this Island, and a ton of others. Are you some kind of idiot? Wow you are rediculously dumb. Because honestly, you hate every show in existance. And really, why do you bother to review any of them? We know you hate everything ever written. What's the point. And really its amazing because I have never in my whole life met someone who hates as many of the greatest shows ever as you do. Next you're going to decide to hate Miss Saigon, The Sound of Music, Chicago, Cabaret, Parade, Songs for a New World, oh and wait, everything else EVER. I am very angry right now. VERY. You are the dumbest person that has ever existed and I would just like you to know that. As for everyone else reading this, ignore this person's reviews. Their opinion means absolutely nothing to almost everyone. I think 4 people found any of this person's 12 reviews helpful. REDICULOUS. And who are you exactly to be discussing anyone else's performance, since I doubt you have any talent and I really doubt you have been on broadway. And since you haven't...
Free Music Review: If you only get 1 recording in your lifetime, make this it!! Hit: 5 Stars
I got the CD a few years ago then saw the show on broadway and touring. I fell in love with it the instant i heard it. Coalhouse is my dream role. It is the best that broadway has to offer and anyone who says differently probably liked CATS and you know where that leaves them. I read the 3 bad reviews it got and it was obvious that the reviewers didn't get the show. One said that Wheels of a Dream was a stupid song about a car. They didn't listen to the lyrics and really didn't tune in to the show. You couldn't have paid attention and been put asleep by it it's impossible. This recording sums up the sheer genious of the performers and the show. Never before have sooo many stars been in one show before(other than Les Mis, which still isn't as good as this).Marin Mazzie and Audra McDonald are two divas who, alone make the recording stand out. Then add lush baritone Brian Stokes Mitchell who makes women swoon. There is also the clear voices of Lynette Perry, Peter Freidman(who has played the phantom previously) and Judy Kaye(who has several solo recordings available and has won a Tony for her portrayl of Carlotta in POTO). Aherns and Flaherty outdid themselves this time. It is extremely gratifying and better than the Lion King(which is just a remake of the movie with great costumes and puppetry)! With the Lion King you don't even need real actors, just robots but Ragtime speaks to the human soul. If you only get one show make this it!!!!!!
Free Music Review: The American Les Mis Hit: 5 Stars
I saw "Ragtime" at the Colonial Theatre in Boston when I was travelling on business. Maybe it was just the venue, maybe it was just that I was, simply, in the mood for it, but I loved it and I got hold of the soundtrack immediately. In an era when Broadway has to rely more and more on revivals, i.e., "Annie get Your Gun", "Music Man", "Show Boat" - I even heard that "West Side Story" is coming back - it is refreshing to see a purely classical kind of musical make it's way into our theatrical culture. An epic in the proportion of Les Mis that depicts the interacting of representatives from 3 differing cultures, this soundtrack has something for everyone. Brian Stokes Mitchell, with his commanding baritone, shows great passion in his numbers (particularily "Make Them Hear You"); Audra Mc Donald, who can do show tunes or arias, quite frankly could enthrall you singing the telephone book; and Marin Mazzie, in the role of "Mother", a real discovery here, shows that she is ready to take her place as one the great female voices in the American theatre. This CD has one of the best Broadway scores I have ever heard, top to bottom. If someone came up to me and said that they had never heard a Broadway Original Cast CD before, this is the one I would have them listen to. Enjoy.
Free Music Review: Ragtime, Ragtime , Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
When I was 11 I got the oppertunity to see Ragtime on Broadway, but back then I really didn't get how deep and beautiful the score was and is. Back then I just thought it was boring and I couldn't wait to leave so I could be that much closer to seeing the Lion King (Which is also an amazing musical, but anyway).
Now that I'm older I truly see how amazing the score is and that it really deserved the Tony. This recording is also inspired, from the first 8 min sweeping introduction into the show, to the it's reprise at the end almost every song is wonderful. Beautifully written and preformed.
Some of my favorites are:
