Free Music Notes for Ragtime - The Musical (1998 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: The "perfect" Broadway Cast Recording Hit: 5 Stars
This OCR has set the standard for all other cast recordings to try to reach! Every song is magnificent and majestic. The score is a perfect representation of Doctorow's theme of an America that changed more in the first fifteen years of this century than during any other part of our history. The struggles of the Jewish immigrant to assimilate into American society, the struggles of the blacks to try to overcome the increasingly dangerous racism of the early 1900s, and the last gasps of the Victorians to hang on to their lost world are all perfectly represented by this musical. The show may not have won the Tony, but most theatre savy folks know that "Ragtime" will be considered one of the century's best musicals, if it is not already considered thus. The original cast members singing on this recording are as perfectly cast actors as you'll ever find in a musical. Each cast member soars. The score is full of glorious solo numbers, touching duets, and break-your-heart stirring "big" numbers. What's stopping you? Buy this CD-- NOW !
Free Music Review: Perfection in a musical recording Hit: 5 Stars
It's amazing how dramatically and musically incredible this recording is. I have yet to find a weakness and have absolutely fallen in love with the CD's. The score itself is AMAZING--Ahrens and Flaherty have created a masterpiece. The lyrics are consistantly moving, poignant, and just plain incredible, and the music spends the entire time soaring in perfection.
Everyone in the cast is incredible. I mean, everyone EXPECTS amazing things from performers like Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Marin Mazzie, and they certainly don't disappoint. Other favorites of mine include Steven Sutcliffe as the Younger Brother in a passionate performance that is one of my favorite parts of the entire score and Judy Kuhn as Emma Goldman. Well, honestly, EVERYONE is incredible. Those are just my favorites.
I'm really struggling for words to describe how much dramatic merit this recording has. So many of the songs move me to a state of such incredible emotion and just utter bliss at how amazing everthing is. Just...buy it. You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: An Excellent Tribute to an Excellent Musical Hit: 5 Stars
I may only be 15 years old, but this musical was exceptional to me when I first saw it 5 long years ago in 1998. I can truly say that the music struck me in such a way to make music my passion. Since then, I have actively participated in, followed, and appreciated all types of music.I recently went to see another off-Broadway production of Ragtime, and memories came flooding back. The songs in this musical are amazingly written, with an impressive complexity music-wise, ranging from simple yet effective tunes to complex dances of melodies between characters. But even more so, the lyrics in these songs are so expertly written, done so in such a way that it strikes the listener at a very personal level. Although I would much more recommend you to see this show live, this CD is a worthy testimonial to a truly excellent musical. The singing in the CD is excellent and almost genuinely reflects watching it in the theater. I would recommend this most to people who want to save and cherish their experience after watching the musical.
Free Music Review: Bravo to a compelling musical... not a bad song in it Hit: 5 Stars
This is by far the most amazing and compeling musical of our time... the music takes you from drama.. to comedy, which in turn leads to an emotional roller coaster... leaving the listner breathless in awe of the performers and composers. If only every musical could have this flare and compassion broadway would be alive and hotter than ever. Brian Stokes Mithchell roars in the roal of coalhose... his voice is sweet, seductive, and raging. Marin Mazzie (mother) has proven herself to me every time she opens her mouth to sing... she soars as mother.. and her final song journey on will leave your mouth hanging open in awe. Of course Audra MacDOnald is perfect in the role of sarah... even in a supporting role the audience feels attached to her.. im guessing it is her distinct beautiful voice. Tateh, Father, YOunger Brother, Emma Golman, and Evelyn NEsbyt add to this show in a way that no other supporting, yet principal charecters can. No weak links... Songs, performers, composers, and all are Music Review: New Music, Wheels of a Dream Hit: 5 Stars
The piece, New Music is one of my favorite songs of all time. The song helps the audience to identify with the characters in the musical. Last year, on a school trip, I saw Ragtime in Chicago. It was absolutly amazing. The song, Wheels of a Dream, is very compelling and moving. It lets the audience see into Sarah and Coalhouse's lives in 1906. They were treated badly and wanted a better life for young Coalhouse. These two prominent characters were compelling all throughout the musical. I encourage you, the reader of this article, to listen to the samples from the C.D. I am sure you will find magic throughout the characters' story. The one thing that makes Ragtime different from other shows is the way the writers weaved the different character's lives with each other, and his ability to weave them with people from the time. (Such as Henry Ford and Emma Goldman.) The musical is spectacular and I encourage everyone to see it if you can. Thank you.
