Free Music Notes for Ragtime - The Musical (1998 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Broadway at its best! Hit: 5 Stars
Stunned to find the shocking news that people could pull such an outstanding musical off of the stage. If you haven't seen the musical yet, it is not to late. January 16, 1999 is the last performance. Being a huge fan of Broadway and its music I have yet to find such a play that strikes the emotions of the audience. With such a cultural context it is impossible for anyway to walk away without being moved. The soundtrack is impeccable, and an outstanding supplement to seeing the play. Buy it! You will never regret it. It is doubtful that this play will ever be redone with the intensity in which it was first produced. If I had the money I would buy the rites, and the theater and keep the show open for all generations to enjoy from now until forever. One day I might be able to do this, after all, "anyone can get lucky in America, I remind my self of this every day." My greatest regards to the actors, writers, and directors.
Free Music Review: A rare collection of treasures Hit: 5 Stars
Rare indeed is it to find, even among the very best written musicals, a score in which every song is intelligent, beautiful and touching. Flaherty and Ahrens have earned their place among the great with their positively glorious Ragtime score...every single track on these two discs is a winner...it is quite possibly the finest cast album I own (and I have quite a sizeable collection!). And those voices...certainly any album on which Audra McDonald's soaring voice can be heard is well worth the purchase price...but this CD boasts nothing but top-notch vocalists across the boards. Hearing Audra and Brian Mitchell sing "Wheels of a Dream" was truly one of the highlights of my show-going career...and while nothing can capture the thrill of seeing it live...this album comes as close as heaven will allow. Great singers, great music and a solid story...Ragtime is truly the Great American Musical.
Free Music Review: Can't Stop Listening Hit: 5 Stars
I have already reviewed this disc, but that was a long time ago, right after it came out. I just recently realized again how much I love the score to Ragtime and thought I would share my thoughts again. I only wish I could get to New York to see it again, especially now that most of the leads are those from the L.A. production I saw in 1997. Every performance on the CD is amazing and Brian Stokes Mitchell is fantastic, and feel so fortunate to have been able to see him. Audra McDonald's voice is amazing as is Marin Mazzie. I get goosebumps when I hear them. I especially love the bonus track that is the orchestral suite at the end of the CD. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty are so amazing and I can't wait for their next show to open. If anyone is debating whether or not to buy this cast recording, you should be able to tell that's it's wonderful by all the five star ratings.
Free Music Review: One of the top musicals of the 1990s! Hit: 5 Stars
Many who saw RAGTIME still rank it as one of the finest musicals of the 1990s! That may not be saying much given the decade saw Tony awards go to trash like SUNSET BLVD (because it was the ONLY new musical that season!) and FOSSE (a recycling of Bob Fosse's dance routines with no real point.) Although the Tony for Best musical of 1997/98 was won by Disney's THE LION KING, the awards for Best Book and Best Score went to RAGTIME.Indeed the score contains one gem after another performed by a first rate cast: Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, Marrin Mazzie, & Mark Jacoby ... the whole ensemble. RCA has given the show a lavish 2 CD presentation getting all of the score and most of the dialogue. The booklet has a detailed synopsis and full libretto. As a bonus, the 2nd Cd has a 10 minute "symphonic suite" based on themes from the score. All in all a first rate package!
Free Music Review: RAGTIME has the Greatest Music of any Current Show ! ! ! Hit: 5 Stars
Explore this album, you will fall in love with it again and again! Of course, you can't get enough of the opening number and show-stoppers like "New Music" and "Wheels of a Dream," but every track on this two-hour-plus album offers something new and exciting. I've seen the show three times since buying the album, and whether you've seen it or not, you will not be able to go back to second rate musicals after hearing this masterpiece work of art. And remeber, Coalhouse is not a jerk, it's just that he can't afford to marry Sarah because of all the legal fees attached to the justice he seeks. That's the only plot confusion caused by the lyrics. And remeber, it's J.P. Morgan who yells "She's got a gun! I saw a gun!" This minor detail is very important to the plot of the second act. Happy listening!
