Finally, a musical that brings back a classic American musical. Brian Stokes Mitchell is unbeleviable with his pleasant yet fierce voice. Audra McDonnell sings beautifully. Great themes that run throughout the whole musical - balanced musical arrangements. Splendid. You'll be up till 4:00 in the morning listening to the harmonious voices combinding and putting into your mind a tune you'll never forget. For the musical theatre lovers, this is a must buy and must see! Make sure to get the full cast recording instead of the themes. With the full recording you can hear everything that wil be heard in the theater. Some of the great songs are "Wheels of a Dream", "Our Children", "Till We Reach That Day", and the Ragtime epilogue where Flaherty combines the whole story beautifuly into one song - a breathtaker...

I was recently involved in a production of "Ragtime" at my community theater. It is not only one of the best shows we have ever done, it is also an amazing show within itself. I purchased this cd shortly after to get the chance to listen to every song with this cast. I am so amazed by the pure talent shown in every single song. Mind you, it's not one of the usual musicals. This one has more emotion and raw feelings involved, and doesn't have a happy show stopper ever 5 minutes. it does, on the other hand, have mind blowing songs that show the true talent of these performers. My personal favorites are "Wheels of a Dream", "Your Daddy's Son", "Til We Reach That Day", and "He Wanted to Say". I saw Ratime both at the initial LA performance and on Broadway, and the score improved considerably. Songs, initially written by several diverse artists, were artfully massaged so that they felt much less disjointed and contributed better to the story. This has got to be one of the best musicals I have ever seen, and I was enormously impressed by the cast.That said, I must complain about the technical problems with this particular recording. Inferior sound equipment was used, as evident by the distortion witnessed at peaks in the songs. In addition, small pops and clicks are audible often throughout the CD.
All in all, though, a beautiful piece of work, recommended for everyone. And see the show! Read the book! Immerse yourself in the time. For a young'in like myself, it is a eye-opening experience.

I actually became interested in RAGTIME THE MUSICAL when I was informed that a friend of mine (Christiane Noll) was performing in the female lead role of "mother" in the broadway revival. I was not able to find the cast recording at my local music stores and so I went to Amazon.com hoping to find it available in good condition at a reasonable price. I did, and I purchased it. It arrived in excellent condition and in a timely fashion. And, once I listenened to the double disc recording the reason for the revival of this musical became immediatly appearant to me. It is a fantastic and poignant musical and deserves it's 2010 Tony nomination for "best musical revival." Also by the way,does Christiane Noll deserve her Tony nomination and Drama Desk nominations for "best performance by a leading actress in a musical."Free Music Review: WONDERFUL CD/SHOW!

OMG! You would not believe how wonderful the CD is compared to the show itself. The show is full of SO many different emotions. From being excited to being sad, it has it all! I saw the show in Chicago at the wonnderful Chicago theatre. I was So amazed at how WONDERFUL the show was!I couldn't believe it. The show had me in SO much "Ah" that I couldn't get it outof my head. I HAD to have the CD. Now my official thought was going to be, "The CDisn't going to satisfy my needs to recapture the show." Bt it did! Listening to the CD, I could piture the WHOLE show in my head. You don't even have to see the show to get what's going on on the CD! You feel all the emotions that you felt while actually seeing the show! I'm amazed in EVERY way. I recommend this CD to ANY person who loves musicals in ANY WAY!
