RAGTIME had its world premiere in Toronto in December 1996. The Toronto critics (myself included) were the first to sing the praises of this fine musical.This recording was made by the Toronto cast (most of whom traveled with the show to Broadway in 1998) while the show was still in rehearsal. The producers wanted the album in stores before the opening night. Even at this early stage it is quite polished and professional sounding though if you are familiar with the 2 CD Broadway recording you will note some changes in the lyrics and song line-up.
I agree with most of the others, get the complete recording if you can as it will give you a better sense of the whole show. But as a recording of highlights (and to hear the cut song "The Show Biz") this is a very worthwhile Cd.

I absolutely adore Ragtime. I am actually in a production of it right now! The book is good, as well as the musical. It attracts a vast amount of people, because the music is so versatile. There are great upbeat songs, inspirational ballads, and of course Ragtime. And, of course, you have Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell. It has a great mixture of music, upbeat fun songs, inspirational ballads, and, of course, ragtime. Plus, you have Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell. I may only be 15 years old, but this musical was exceptional to me when I first saw it 5 long years ago in 1998. I can truly say that the music struck me in such a way to make music my passion. Since then, I have actively participated in, followed, and appreciated all types of music.I recently went to see another off-Broadway production of Ragtime, and memories came flooding back.
The songs in this musical are amazingly written, with an impressive complexity music-wise, ranging from simple yet effective tunes to complex dances of melodies between characters. But even more so, the lyrics in these songs are so expertly written, done so in such a way that it strikes the listener at a very personal level.
Although I would much more recommend you to see this show live, this CD is a worthy testimonial to a truly excellent musical. The singing in the CD is excellent and almost genuinely reflects watching it in the theater. I would recommend this most to people who want to save and cherish their experience after watching the musical.

In 1997, Canadian theatrical producer brought out a musical based on E.L. Doctorow's 1975 hit novel, Ragtime. This hit play tells several stories simultaneously, but largely revolves around one complacent white family coming to terms with the issues of race and class in early 20th century America. The 38(!) songs on this two CD set walk the listener through the play, giving you a wonderful familiarity with the story.The songs on these CDs are wonderfully written and performed, and are truly each a work of art. I have enjoyed hours of listening to the songs over and over again. Indeed, closing your eyes, you can listen to these songs and feel as if you have seen the play; the songs are that compelling! Overall I enjoyed these CDs and highly recommend them to everyone.
