I recently saw this musical in Chicago. I didn't know what it was about going into the theater. Was I ever delighted! I enjoy all types of music, but the music in this really touched me. It tells a wonderful story of what the world was like in one small town in the early 1900's. The trials of one white family, one black family, and one immigrant family and how they become connected to each other by chance. In listening to the music from "Ragtime" there is humor, romance, tragedy, and revenge. Everything a great story should be about. If you like ragtime music mixed with a variety of wonderful sure-to-be best selling broadway tunes, this is a great CD to invest in!!Free Music Review: Absolutely amazing!

Just last night my family saw the touring cast at the Stranahan Theatre in Toledo, Ohio, and we were blown away by the powerful voices, terrific acting, and wonderful songs that are in this show. Sadly, the theatre wasn't selling any CDs, so I had to wait to get one. Anyway, there aren't enough good things I can say about this CD. Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me, Kate) has such a poweful voice, he captures the spirit of Coalhouse so easily. And Marrin Mazzie (Kiss Me, Kate), as Mother, sends chills down my spine in her trio with Father and Tateh, "Journey On".
If you're considering buying this CD, I wouldn't hesitate a second: the music is larger than life. 5 stars!

I had the great fortune to see the original production of Ragtime in Toronto with Audra, Marin Mazzie, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. It was actually the last performance there prior to the re-working of the show for Broadway. Not knowing what to expect, I was completely blown away by what I firmly believe is one of the best musicals of all time. This CD captures the emotion of the show and I get chills every time I hear it..especially during Audra's solos and duets.
I know others have complained about the quality. Generally it's very good, but I agree there are a few recording irregularities. They are not too intrusive (mostly volume changes and a few crackles).

I first read the book when it came out in 1975.
It turned out to be one of the best books I ever enjoyed.
Later, I saw an ad for the musical on TV, and thought:
"They can't possibly change that into a musical!"
I had some lady friends in town, and the musical was playing at our main auditorium here in Phoenix, so I took them and explained the story to them.
I left there that night saying "They pulled it off!"
To this day I love it!
I love my Country, and this is one of the best examples of why I feel that way.
Don't bother replying, as I probably won't be back...
Free Music Review: Excellent recording of an excellent show

I highly recommend this item, especially if you're looking for a new favorite musical. Buy this 2 CD set, instead of the 1 CD version because 1) the 1 CD version is merely a concept album, and the final show underwent numerous changes before taking its final form, 2) In order to fit on 1 CD some of the best music of the show is cut from the other version, and 3) the 2 CD version contains enough narration and plot songs that if you've never seen the show you have a very good idea of what it's about.
Unlike many other cast albums, "Ragtime" doesn't contain any clunker songs. Every one is either catchy, innovative, heart wrenching, or outright fun.
