Free Music Review: Thank God for this Brother...
Hit: 5 Stars

As much as I love R&B music, I don't think there is a ton of imagination used in the song writing and production of most artist's music. And with one artist after another using the same old producers, the result is overly familiar music littering the radio and the cds. To say it another way... There's a lot of music being made but few songs that we'll remember in 10 years.

Raheem Devaughn makes real music. Strong music, that has the timeless nature of some of Marvin Gaye's best. I could go on and on about this cd, but I won't. Just buy it. If you don't like it I'll refund your money.... Well... No, I won't. But, you get the picture :)

He has the ability to create music that accomplishes it's goal. If he wants you to dance, the song will be so compelling that you'll dance no matter where you are, like on "Friday". If you're driving you'll have people pointing at the 'nut in the other car' who is dancing so hard the whole car is shaking, and you won't even care. "Customer" will have you making calls at midnight. "Mo Better" speaks words that every woman wants to hear and guys that have a wonderful woman want to play this song to their love. Again, I could go on. This cd is near flawless.

My only criticism is with songs 8. Not my flavor. Maybe I'm too old fashioned.

Did you buy it yet? Go ahead, do-eeet!

Free Music Review: I can be his "CUSTOMER"
Hit: 4 Stars

I didn't hear of Raheem DeVaughn until I heard "You" off of his first album.."The Love Experience". It had such a different feel to it. I was riding with my friend..and I was like wow. I left it alone. Then he came back out with this cd, "Love Behind The Melody.." I heard "Woman." I was like oh okay. Went and bought it..and was diggin it. I saw him on the Jill Scott tour and he was the opening act. He did a good job. This album is good..with an old school feel to it. His voice reminds me of Marvin. It's just sooo smooth.

I should be mad at this man for going all commercial on me. His last album was a below the radar gem. With this release mainstream R&B can no longer ignore him. While his last album was a showcase of his skills with the pen as well as his voice, this album is far more ambitious. Evidence of this is with the first single "Woman" for which he received a Grammy nomination.

Production wise Raheem has gone with seasoned hit makers like Scott Storch, Brian Cox & Mark Batson. Scott Storch, who seems to be making a come back strays from his characteristic piano loops in favour of a more old school sound on my favourite track "Love Drug" and on Big Boi (OutKast) collaboration "Energy".

The old school vibe is maintained on the stellar "Mo Better", a nod to 70s and "Butterflies" where he takes it all the way back to the 60s and to good effect to. "Empty", another favourite recalls the 90s sounds of R&B groups like Jodeci and Silk without sounding dated. Its not all throwbacks however as "Customer" sounds like something straight out of J. Holiday's or The Dream's albums. The mandatory love ballad "The L Word" ensures that all bases are covered, giving the album the desired mass appeal.

Where the album stumbles at times is with the pen work. The afore mentioned "Customer" & "Love Drug" are tired metaphors much like R. Kelly's most recent work. Both are good songs but lack distinction. Raheem's attempt at a club banger gets points for being brave but ultimately fails. You can't turn "My Girl" into a club hit. The club tracks didn't work on album one and they don't work here either.

Except for "Friday (Shut The Club Down)" you can forgive the few missteps because of the quality of the execution and Raheem DeVaughn has a great voice. Something that sets him apart from a lot of his contemporaries.

Ultimately Raheem succeeds in creating his most accessible album to date by borrowing from R&B past and present. He puts it best on his intro when he calls himself an R&B hippie and a Neo Soul rockstar.

Free Music Review: What a great album!
Hit: 4 Stars

This CD is really nice. I enjoyed almost every song. It is wonderfully written with all the woes and love lines that make R&B music what it was a long time ago. I like the metaphors and unique writing. This is a nice CD to listen to with your significant other.
