Free Music Review: 'MasterPeace' is a 'Masterpiece'
Hit: 5 Stars

Unfortunately, every year there are a few albums that I kind of sit aside to listen to and review at a later time. This go-around, for 2010, one of those albums was Raheem DeVaughn's fine third effort, The Love & War MasterPeace. Surprisingly, DeVaughn takes a slightly different approach on this album then he did on his last effort, the excellent (if underrated) Love Behind The Melody, which featured critically lauded cuts "Woman" and "Customer." From a first listen of 2010's 'The Love & War MasterPeace,' I was impressed with opening cuts "Bulletproof" and "The Greatness," but after that, I sort of "slept" on the effort which is unfair to an artist the caliber of DeVaughn. After finally coming to my `musical' senses and listening thoroughly to 'The Love & War MasterPeace,' DeVaughn delivers a magnificent album. Unfortunately for DeVaughn, much like my nonchalant treatment of the album ("sleeping" on it), it has received similar treatment commercially, which is sad because it is one of 2010's very best albums.

Dr. Cornel West contributes several interludes here, all contributing to the more socially-conscious approach to this album. Following West's first interlude ("Dr. Cornel West Intro"), the album's lead single and valedictory cut, "Bulletproof," featuring Ludacris, captivates. Here, the production work by Kenny Dope is superb, incorporating a smart choice of sample of Curtis Mayfield's "The Other Side of Town." DeVaugh channels Mayfield through his laid back vocal approach, with superb falsetto intact. Ludacris, whose verses are often `ludicrous,' spits a mean and tastefully written rap that enhances the greatness of the cut. Speaking of "The Greatness" (featuring Wale), it loses no momentum, finding more typical production work a la 'Love Behind the Melody'. This track reminds me of "Woman" to an extent, but it in no way sounds like a blatant rewrite. Again, the falsetto by DeVaughn is masterful while Wale contributes another noteworthy rap.

"I Don't Care" loses no steam, and brings R&B singer/songwriter standout Ne-Yo on board to pen some lyrics. Here, especially on the bridge, DeVaughn channels some vocal nuances directly from soul legend Marvin Gaye. "Black and Blue" reignites socially driven issues where DeVaughn constantly expresses to ladies that "I Would never put my hands on you," alluding to being loved by a `real man.' "Mr. Right," another sensational cut (no misses on this album!), finds DeVaughn supported by strummed guitars and lovely piano. Authenticity plays a key role here, selling "Mr. Right" very well.

Cornel West contributes another interlude, followed by the exceptional "Fragile," featuring Malik Yusef features great, soulful production work and some sensational vocal nuances by DeVaughn. Similarly, "My Wife" (another sound Kenny Dope production), is catchy and well written, not to mention great closing ad libs by DeVaughn. "B.O.B." gets the award for most creative songwriting, alluring the listener because it is unexpected and unique. "Bedroom" lays well well (no pun intended), while the grand "Microphone" turns an amplification object into something much more sensual.

"Garden of Love" is no miss either. A final "Dr. Cornel West" interlude appears, followed by the start studded "Nobody Wins a War." "Nobody Wins A War" is lengthy and while it is not the best cut of the album, it is a worthwhile listen by all means. Closing cut "Revelations 2010," featuring Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley closes the album exceptionally. Of course Marley is a great collaborative artist, which reminds me of that other album people (and myself included) slept on, Distant Relatives (Nas/Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley).

A, even A+? I think so. My biggest issue with 'The Love & War MasterPeace' is its length, and that's not even considering the Deluxe Version of the album which I believe lays closers to two hours in length. However, at least with an album this length, every single cut is worthwhile. We as listeners have become accustomed to the forty - fifty minute album, but sometimes, there is more filler material there than say lengthier, more consistent efforts such as this. I highly recommend listers get up out of the bed, wake up, and listen to some Raheem DeVaughn. This is not a 'MasterPeace,' but a 'masterpiece.'

The Love & War MasterPeace Poster

Raheem DeVaughn is back with his third album The Love & War MasterPeace. On the heels of his 2008 Grammy nominated release The Love Behind The Melody, The Love & War MasterPeace is a tale of two tales though love and war.

The lead single "Bulletproof" featuring Ludacris takes us on a journey through today's social and political issues reminiscent of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, while the Ne-Yo produced "I Don't Care" touches on the importance of a strong relationship.

With Raheem's distinctive style and exceptional production, The Love & War MasterPeace is sure to satisfy his fans while making room for newcomers. The Love & War MasterPeace solidifies Raheem DeVaughn as true vocalist and an infectious songwriter, recording music to stand the test of times.
