Free Music Review: Guilty Pleasure

When I first heard The Case of the 3 Sides Dream in Audio Color the United States of America was not yet 200 years old and I was something of a jazz purist, so listening to it was a guilty pleasure! I knew I should be listening to Armstrong, Beiderbecke, Ellington, Parker and Coltrane. I knew that it was my duty to like Miles' takes on Funk better than this crazy quilt from Rahsaan, but I kept finding myself listening to it! The more I listened, the more I liked it. So, I give up! Despite its shortcomings, this is the piece of jazz that it dearest to me. The quality is uneven, but its highs are the highest. For me, only Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity and Armstrong's early combos pack as much beauty note for note.
Now to the 2-second silences-- I have the LPs, so I know how it is supposed to flow. In my opinion only the silences involving the 'horses' tracks, 4 and 17, wreck the flow of the music. I took those out, re-mastered the music onto CDRs and set my CD player to skip silences for this release. Perhaps when I have more time I will re-master and restore the EXACT timings. About the re-issue: Really, people who fool with Rahsaan's intentions by re-ordering tracks or adding silences after he is dead should be ashamed of themselves! Thankfully, in this case it is only silences, but the segue from track 17 to 18 is hideous! Rahsaan gave us this incredible beauty and 2 years later he was dead. Thanks for making the music available, but have some respect and humility and take your responsibility seriously.
