I cannot say a single bad thing about this album. From the artwork to the songs themselves everything is perfect. I don't feel the need to be verbose since many previous reviews did a wonderful job at breaking the album down into detail. I will say this though:
Stargazer is one of my FAVORITE songs of all time. For me it is right up there in the top 10 alongside Freebird, Stairway to Heavan, etc. etc. Crazy? Maybe...but IMHO it is the truth. From the pounding drums and driving keyboards to the EPIC storytelling & vocals from Dio....I love this track. When it comes on my ipod while I'm working (painting houses) or at my house I play it no less than 4 times in a row
Tarot Woman 9/10
Run With the Wolf 9/10
Starstruck 8.5/10
Do you Close Your Eyes 8/10
Stargazer 20/10!!!!
Light in the Black 10/10!!!
Free Music Review: Cozy's finest Hit: 5 Stars
One of the many tragedies of Cozy Powell's car-crash death last year was learning that his real name was Colin. 'Colin' doesn't seem appropriate to this heavy, mystical tour-de-force.This is the second re-mastered CD version of the album I have bought. The stunning opening track, 'Tarot Woman', is 6:08 minutes on the earlier, but only 5:58 on this, the more recent and rather better version. Where have those ten seconds been lost? On the first CD, Don Airey's synth opening hangs in the air for an extra bar or so before Blackmore's riff invades -- not like the original LP at all. On this, the timing of the original LP is restored. There is nothing that I can add to the enthralled reviews here. This is the Rainbow album to get. 'Tarot Woman' and 'Stargazer' are the stand-out tracks. This is Blackmore's best album outside the Deep Purple catalogue.
Free Music Review: One of the Essential Metal Albums Hit: 5 Stars
After a false start Rainbow makes an album that is still remember one of the best rock albums ever. Ritchie Blackmore (before in Deep Purple) made his own band, Rainbow. In the vocals was Ronnie James Dio who has made also great solo carriere and three albums in Black Sabbath (Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer). Dio's voice is quite typical hard rock voice. Rainbow's music is quite happy in this album although lyrics may not always be happy...Stargazer...for example. Most of Rainbow's songs are superstitious "A Light in the Black", "Tarot Woman", "Stargazer", "Run With the Wolf". And about ladies "Starstruck"...about sex "Do You Close Your Eyes" ....When You're Making Love. Quite personal question. "Stargazer" is an art work...it is like Led Zeppelin's Kashmir...a classic of the classics.
Stars: Stargazer, Tarot Woman, Do You Close Your Eyes
Free Music Review: Rising Above Hit: 5 Stars
This album is quite simply the greatest work by everyone involved.Ronnie James Dio sings his ass off Blackmore, after years of stagnating in a waning Deep Purple, wakes up and delivers some unbelievable playing. Stargazer especially shows an uncaged Richie at the height of his powers. Cozy Powell (RIP) If there is a better drummer from the NWOBHM please tell me who he is. He rules on this album, and delivers another in a string of fine performances. Tony Carey had his work cut out for him. Playing a lead instrument with Blackmore around is a daunting task for any keyboard player (in other words: only the strong survive). Carey hits it out of the ballpark especially on Tarot Woman. Jimmy Bain is a solid bass player and is still with Dio, good work here by a Journeyman. I put it in the top ten Hard Rock/Heavy Metal albums of all time.
Free Music Review: Simply Put This Album Is Still Very Amazing Hit: 5 Stars
Having seen Rainbow as my first concert in 1976 when they toured with this album was amazing. Although i have seen almost 200 concerts since then, I still remember the show like it was yesterday, the lights, the incredible voice of RJD, the killer guitar playing of Richie, and thunderous drums of Cozy were mind boggling. After many years of not playing this album, i recently came across it in my collection, and in the last few days have not stopped playing it, the album still sounds as fresh as it did when it first came out. It is very sad that Ronnie recently passed away, I have seen him many times with Sabbath, Dio band and more recently Heaven and Hell, I cannot believe that he is gone, in my humble opinion he was one of the best RnR singers the world has ever seen. Buy this album, it is truly one the best hard rock albums ever produced.
