Free Music Notes for Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]Free Music Review: Greatest rock guitarist period. Hit: 5 Stars
I'v been listening to Rainbow for awhile now and i consider them to be my all-time favorite band ever. I can't put in to words how perfect Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow is,its just the best rock album i'v ever listened to in my life(along with "rising" and "long livr rock n roll")and i find it just plain retarded that this band was never as famous as say led zepplin, black sabbath, the beatles, queen or aerosmith. with that said, i contiunue that statment by wondering why Ritchie Blackmore never got the status he deserved other then for the song "smoke on the water", probably the simplest song he ever wrote, and i'm sure he is as sick of that song as i am. he wrote such master pieces like "stargazer" "mistreated" and "sixteenth century greensleeves" yet people always think of that infamous deep purple song when ever his name is mentioned. thats sad because he is with out a doubt the greatest guitar player ever, certainly better then page, hendrix or clapton ever were. oh well, enough of my complaining, on to the album. "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" was ritchie's project band after he left Deep Purple and this was their debut album. What is interesting is that this is basically dio's old band, Elf, whith Ritchie replacing the original guitar player from that band (ironicaly dio's cousin) and it is a cross between Elf's blues and honky tonk soul meets Ritchie's classical/hardrock style. it starts with probably the most famous and well known Rainbow song, "man on the silver mountain" which is one of the first fantasy rock songs written. highlights of this album (although i love the whole thing) are "man on the silver mountain" "catch the rainbow" "temple of the king" "sixteenth century greensleeves" and "still i'm sad" but the songs inbetween these are also very stong so don't disregard them! one of my all time favorite albums! i love the cover too, it is just so magical, very inspiring. don't missout on this album because it just dosent get the attention from classic rock radio and not many (even rock fans) people don't even know of this band.
Free Music Review: Rainbow about to rise Hit: 5 Stars
If you're a stranger to Blackmore and Rainbow, this would be the first album for you to get. Not only because it's their first record after Ritchie Blackmore departed from his legendary Deep Purple roots, but also because this disc provides a very wide overview of what the band was and would be about.Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow did not create a mass hysteria, neither did it bring about any shocking revelations... However, the music that this newly formed quintet offered to the rock fans was extremely tight, professional and at that time very fresh and new. The audience was slowly getting tired of blues rock, and a new set of bands stepped forward to replace the godfathers like Purple, Zeppelin and Uriah Heep... Rainbow in itself definitely became one of the leaders of this movement, which also includes Whitesnake, Judas Priest, AC/DC, etc., The album contains such classics as "The Man on the Silver Mountain", which the band loved to play at concerts in different variations, also "Catch the Rainbow", "Temple of the king", both viewing the medieval likes of the band, especially combined with the powerful voice of Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie's skillful play. The final track, "Still I'm sad" is one of the instrumental favorites. Twenty plus years later Blackmore would re-record this track for his newly re-formed "Rainbow". Enjoy this album, it's definitely one of the "must-own"s
Free Music Review: Brilliant metal masterpiece, but this new remaster is worse than the first issue Hit: 5 Stars
I was a big Deep Purple and Elf-Dio fan and this debut Rainbow effort is one of the better if not the best albums that Dio has ever appeared on. I think that it's about tied with LONG LIVE ROCK & ROLL as the finest Rainbow album. Another reviewer said that RISING was better than the debut but I don't agree. RISING is an aquired taste in my opinion, and it took me awhile to get into but it's still a good album. I got rid of the first issue of BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW several years ago, but just aquired the newest remaster and the treble response sounds a lot worse than from before and it sounds really distorted on my great car cd deck. There's nothing wrong with my car stereo either because all my other cds sound just fine. I can't believe other reviewers aren't mentioning the bad sound quality but I won't take off a star or anything because this album is such a classic. I guess I'm going to have to search out a used first issue of this on Amazon. Believe me, every song on this is just superb and definitely no filler on this release. I just wish that Dio could have gotten along with Blackmore better so we could have had a lot more albums from this lineup, but sometimes two big stars like this will definitely [...]heads, and that turns out to be the case. Go for the first issue if you want to buy this classic metal-hard rock offering.
Free Music Review: A classic album with world class talent Hit: 5 Stars
You got to give it to Ritchie Blackmore. During a Deep Purple tour, Elf was the supporting band fronted than none other than Ronnie James Dio. Blackmore decided to take over Elf, fire their guitarist, add himself and change the name of the band to Rainbow. Talk about an ego! Axl Rose has nothig on this guy.
However the music and end result is all that matters in the long run. This album may fall short of being a masterpiece, but not by much. The album opens up with can only be described as amazing. "Man on the Silver Mountain" is such a cool song because you can hear so many elements. The guitar riff is straight up classic Deep Purple and the lyrics and singing is a sign of things to come when Dio takes over Black Sabbath and continues with his band Dio. The song itself is worth the price of admission, but there so much more good material here.
Black Sheep of the Family is a favorite of mine, as is Snake Charmer. Blackmore's Fender is all over this album and it blends in so nice with Ronnie's singing style at the time. And like I said, for Dio fans this is a must. It is an early look at Ronnie's writing style. All the sorcery, magic, rainbows, dragons, and sorcery type songs that Dio is famous for pretty much began with this record.
Free Music Review: solid hard rock Hit: 5 Stars
Rainbow's debut is a great thrill if you're a big fan of Deep Purple's classic lineup (Machine Head in particular). Blackmore continues his melodically soothing guitar sound on this album. "catch the rainbow" is probably the best song here because it will remind you of a sunset in Louisiana and hearing crickets. "man on the silver mountain" is another highlight, and was even a big hit for a brief period in the mid 70's. If you like "smoke on the water" you will like this song too, no doubt.
"temple of the king" is probably the song to stand out the most because it's a really good adventurous-fantasy type song. It reminds me of that early 80's movie called The Neverending Story. No, not the theme song, I mean the movie itself. Remember that movie? It was about a boy who goes on a magical journey using his imagination. This movie and that song are so similar to each other it's not even funny.
Despite that, this album is mostly about having fun and rocking out with lots of guitars and a really good classic rock sound. Perhaps the best sound a rock record can have found right here. This is mostly a guitar-driven album, with the guitar being the main feature. Worth a purchase? Absolutely.
