Free Music Notes for Raising Sand

Free Music Review: BRILLIANT
Hit: 5 Stars

As a record producer, engineer, and artist, I am familiar with the well-used phrase, "less is more", and this album is a perfect example of that. In this day and age of over-compressed, layered, homogenized mush that you hear on the radio and CD's, "Raising Sand" raises the bar for excellence in producing such a sonically pure album. Listening to this album on 'phones, it is as if I am lying in my bed, and Plant and Krauss are singing just inches away from my face with just the few necessary studio musicians right behind them. Of course, it all begins and ends with the songs, and every one here is a gem. T-Bone Burnette is my new hero as a record producer and I put him right up there with Tom Dowd. T-Bone doesn't care a wit about technology and strives to keep the singers and song at the foreground. Something else only those pro's might notice is the obvious analogue tape-hiss, long since absent with the advent of digital recording technology. But Burnette chooses the analogue domain over digital much like a director who chooses film over video tape for its inherent warmth and color saturation. The instrumentation is beautifully sparse; a unique pairing of acoustic upright bass with electric guitars through heavy-tremelo'd amplifiers. The drums are played very softly which makes them sound huge but not overbearing. I can't say enough about this album....

Free Music Review: CROSSING GENRES WITH T-BONE AT THE HELM
Hit: 5 Stars

At first hearing of the vocalist pairing for this disc, I thought WHAAAAT!?
shrieking with my hands to my face ala Craig Ferguson. I didn't like it at first, but, upon repeated listenings, found this recording to be very, very, good. The proof is in the little things. One has to work (listen with patient ears) with this one. There are tunes where they shine alone and together. The tune selection is excellent, and being a longtime fan of Gene Clark (original member of the Byrds) happy to find two of his tunes done so well here.
Plant's take on Pretty Polly is gorgeous with Alison's beautiful harmony
on top. Ear candy. We knew Plant could yell & scream, now we here how he
sings without having to compete with John Bonham's drumming.
And isn't this what we serious listeners want from our favorite performers- mix it up, don't play in same genre all the time?
They chose one of today's most eclectic producers, T-Bone Burnett, whose house band is supplanted by Norman Blake, Mike Seeger, and Riley Baugus (Riley must of met T-Bone when doing the soundtrack for the Oh Brother film - Riley winds up in some weird places for a clawhammer banjo player from North Carolina, but it's great! for him, go Riley!)
A very satisfying listen. And I'm proud they had the guts to do it.

Free Music Review: True "Music" Fans fans rejoice
Hit: 5 Stars

Finally something extremely listenable and very different from the formulaic drivel that lines the store shelves. I had been intrigued to hear this album ever since I heard of the pairing on an up coming collaboration. Never before have such seemingly disparate sources formed such a fantastic whole. I truly believe that this is music that transcends genres and stereotypes. I am saddened by the close minded pigeon holing factions that have bought this album expecting either AKUS or Zeppelin instead of letting this work stand outside of Plant's and Krauss's reputations. That might heave been what they once have done, but these are certainly not one trick ponies and there really is something for everyone in here. From the Everly Brothers done better than the Everly Brothers ever could have; to the gypsy haunts; to that which just pure defies classification; this is a real tour de force for those who just plain enjoy good "MUSIC". I believe that stepping outside of the familiar and the expected is what this whole group of musician's brought together for this album had in mind, and they seemed to have both excelled and reveled in it. So, leave the nameplates at home, open your mind and get ready for a soft, subdued thrill ride and you will be better for it when you get to the other side.

Free Music Review: Music is life
Hit: 5 Stars

Alison Krause is bluegrass? Heck I thought she was into religous music as I saw "O Brother, Where art thou." I enjoyed her music in the movie but never would have thought the tunes in "Raising Sand" would be so wonderful.

I'm a newcomer to Robert Plant [Led Zepplin] and love the "No Quarter" DVD [the CD was a bummer.] BUT! because I like the Led Zepplin music I've heard and Robert Plant on the DVD, I thought I'd give this alubm a try. "Raising Sand" showed me the versatility of Plant and probably Alison Krauss. So now I have to search for more on Alison K. and see if I want to spend bucks on her music.

Bluegrass can be enjoyable because of the recording techniques. Way back when [1950-60s], I considered it Hillbilly; the sound was horrible.

This is a laid back album of voice, background, and rhythm. The sound quality is excellent.

Amazon needs to put that category in too [sound quallilty] as some albums are rather like the ole 45's especially when looking for earlier songs. These days I look for "remastered" sound. If it ain't better than my 45's, forgetaboutit!

I favored "Gone Gone Gone" over "Please write the letter" but that's a personal choice.

Free Music Review: Absolutely Haunting!
Hit: 5 Stars

I think Led-heads who are excited about a new Robert Plant CD will be extremely disappointed. Mr. Plant is no longer a spring chicken or a wild rooster for that matter. He's a mature artist looking to spread his wings. I think he's found a new groove! Isn't that truly the sign of a great and lasting artist? Someone who can shed their skin, try on something new and make it fit like a glove.
Plant's voice is so bluesy here and very mellow. Kraus, whom I know very little about provides a wonderful balance. I believe this will become a classic. I thoroughly enjoy listening to this CD; before I know it, it's over. It's as if it flows effortlessly from the beginning to the end of the disc; one piece of work with a dozen punctuations!
I'm sure those who love this CD are wondering if the duo will record again. This is one of those cases where I almost hope they don't. This is a kind of stand-alone masterpiece in my opinion. Remake Gone With The Wind and it will BOMB. Try to copy the Stones or The Beatles and it will BOMB. Hey, they even tried to make a go of a sequel to Blair Witch Project, and it BOMBED. Got it? You don't mess with singular perfection.
