Free Music Review: The French Baroque with oomph

Minkowski's Handel is usually a mixed bag and I'm not fully convinced that he is a true Handelian; however, the French baroque in general and Rameau in particular is where this beguiling young maestro, more often than not, shines. I love Rameau, his melodic inventiveness, his unerring good taste and grace, his Gallic wit and refinement and no where is this more prevalent than in his operas. From William Christie we have come to expect restrained elegance and with Christophe Rousset a delicate, introspective hand is always at work; both men yield extraordinary results. In this case, however, the heart lies in the drama, in the intensity of it all. Minkowski foregoes a little of the elegance to get to the pulse of the music at its most elemental. There is blood and guts here, folks and not just the pretty divertissements devised for the amusement of the French court and countless idle nobility that most people associate with this musical style. Too often baroque music, especially French baroque, is handled with too much finesse and fussiness, as though it were an enormous Limoges plate in a museum exhibition and it's very refreshing to hear it with this kind of oomph and stirring relevance. Tempo's are on the fast side, but Minkowski is not known for cautious speeds and deliberate pacing; he's more often about fireworks and sometimes that works and other times it doesn't. We're clearly in the first category here. It works and works well. I found it an exhilarating release and though some may not care too much for Minkowski's intense approach, few will deny its visceral impact
