Free Music Review: A Truly Great LIVE Album by a Truly Great LIVE Band

Surprise, surprise! I never wanted to be a Rammstein fan, but I was inevitably hooked from the opening riff of "Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen Sehen". In reference to my thoughts befor hearing this record: Herzeleid was a surprisingly great record, Sehnsucht even more so, but it was always anticipated that Rammstein would look and sound great live. "Nothing more than a joke band"? Bah. The 14 classic tracks and one single track interpreted live here all have something to offer; The best performances come from a rock-solid, spectacular rendition of "Rammstein", one of the weaker tracks from Herzeleid, which could very well be called the climax of this record, and its follow-up, a bone-crunching rendition of "Laichzeit" in which the band REALLY blows out all the stops (and blows the copycat "Eifersucht" straight to Hades). The opening track, a thrilling, progressive version of the brilliant "Spiel Mit Mir" demonstrates how the song can really get an audience going. Being their biggest hit, the "Du Hast" present here is supposed to be a stellar piece of showmanship, and it thankfully is. The beloved "Seeman" is meant to be a singalong, but you can still listen to the track silently and notice how much the audience adores the piece. "Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen Sehen", "Sehnsucht", and "Bestrafe Mich" all undergo powerfully rocking run-throughs. "Engel" is another favorite that is meticulously and entertainingly carried out. The unforgettable "Buck Dich" is the first flawed track on this list, because, though the version here is as great as anything else (with the said "additional rhythms"), the fact that you are listening to the song but not watching the fake sodomizing sequence leaves a bit to be desired. "Asche zu Asche" is as driving and menacing as ever. "Du Riechst So Gut", "Heirate Mich", and "Weisses Fleisch", all reaped for audience participation, pale in comparison to their original versions, but are still great fun. The sole misstep is the uneven "Wilder Wein", a single track that is so soft and lush, it is almost entirely drowned out by the cheering audience. All in all, no matter where one's tastes fall, this is still remarkable stuff, and anyone who appreciates music or metal should own this. By the way, I don't quite own the "Live Aus Berlin" videorecording and I haven't heard "Mutter" quite yet, but I am eager to see whether they live up to Herzeleid, Sehnsucht, or this and will post my comments on them as soon as possible.
