Free Music Review: Power, emotion and meaning
Hit: 5 Stars

I do not know where to start. There is not a single bad track on the entire album.
The first thing you will notice when you listen to Rammstein's "Mutter" is the outstanding musical discipline used to achieve an incredibly "tight" and ammaculate sound.
Mutter is also very melodic. Every song has a definable theme, rather than just a messy sounding jumble of guitars, bass, keyboard and drums.
I might also mention that this is Rammstein's first album to include orchestral strings sections.

[1]MEIN HERZ BRENNT (My Heart Burns): What an opening. The strings provide a deeply cinematic feel, as lead singer Till Lindemann opens with "Nun lieber Kinder, gebt fein acht", translating to "Now dear children, pay attention...". The strings deeper sections come in before bursting into guitars and drums, while the strings, still playing, perform an series of fast scales, coinciding with Rammstein's familiar industrial-sound. This contrast works remarkably well.

[2] LINKS 2 3 4 (Left 2 3 4): The political song of the album, contradicting claims that the are supporters of the Right Wing, or Nazism (The title represents a march). The guitars provide a surprisingly catchy theme and, in my opinion, is one of the most energetic songs on the album.

[3] SONNE (Sun): Rammstein created a guitar riff with this song that always makes me think "why hasn't this been done before?" A beautiful sampling of a wailing choir is heard towards the end, as "the world counts loudly to ten...", and the strong vocals emphasize the song just that much more. Wow.

[4]: ICH WILL (I Want): The song that got me into Rammstein. Within 20 seconds of hearing this song, I decided to buy all their albums! And I am very picky about music! Prior to hearing this, only classical was for me. The guitars and keyboard work together producing a monstrous, but obviously melodic sound.

[5]: FEUER FREI! (Open Fire!): Ok, a calm synth sound. Sounds quie nice I suppose, then, holy crap, KA-BOOM! The guitars, bass and keyboard hit you so fast, you really need to be aware of when it will arrive! Im my opinion, the "messiest" song of the album, but even so retains it's clean and "compact" sound.

[6]: MUTTER (Mother): The album song. Beautiful, anthem like guitar theme, different from any other song on the album. This song, like Mein Herz Brennt, includes the orchestra and creates a very powerful song. Right towards the end of the sogn Till's voice fades in before hitting the final chorus and ending with "Mother! Oh give me strength".

[7]: SPIELUHR (Music box): A very story-like song. Opens with just Till's voice. One can visualise him reciting a fairy-tale to children. An awesome chorus, very expansive-sounding. Also includes another odd combination of guitars and music box and sounds really, quite wonderful.

[8]: ZWITTER (Hermaphrodite): Now we reach the more sinister of songs. This song has one of my favourite choruses and has downright hilarious lyrics. I suggest you check them out!

[9]: REIN RAUS (In Out): As can be guessed by the ever-so-subtle title, this is a song about sex. Understandably, people might be turned off by this, yet I find the composition so damn awesome! Right towards the end a frentic keyboard section flies up and down various scales performing loops and such creating a bizarre "circus effect"! Just perfect!

[10]: ADIOS (Goodbye): Yes, this is Spanish and was dedicated to a drug addict (I forget his name). Great guitar solo (I'm using these "great" adjectives a lot, I know...), and great chorus. Great great great!

[11]: NEBEL (Mist): Quite possibly my favourite song of all time. If you get the chance to hear this, please excuse the rather slow introduction and give it a chance. The song is about a man's last few moments with the girl he loves before she passes away. Set on a beach, the chorus sings "And then he kissed her, where the sea ends...". Don't mistake this for another cheesy pop song, please.

After the first few verses, the drums come in, as though you are expecting the guitars. Instead, what you get is lush, astonishingly beautiful strings flooding everything out. A cymbal clash concludes the string's part and back to the verse. If the chorus doesn't move you, the concluding words to the song will, as the it ends amidst a dissonant clash of strings and keyboard, and then resting on a long orchestral note. It ends, just as it begin. Beautifully.

So there you have it. Any industrial metal band that can successfully pull off a romantic song without being cheesy is a worthy band. And that is Rammstein.

Free Music Review: Outstanding musical acomplishemnt.
Hit: 5 Stars

I am not a person to be completely captivated by celebrities for any reason, ever. However with Rammstein it is different story. Don't know what it is exactly, but something captured my soul at first, then showed in true freedom in the raw feeling of this music.

Rammstein is, for lack of any better word, amazing. Positively stunning in every way shape and form.
They are raw untempered fury and unbridled emotion. By untempered I do not mean that their sound has not been refined to it's highest potential only that it has not been made, as so many bands have been, to fit inside the perimeters of popular music. Certainly is not untempered for lack of fire. =)

While Rammstein certainly deserves all the popularity they get and much, much more, it is their radically different sound and conveyed emotion that makes them what they are. Herzeleid was a stunning album, I actually bought it after Sehnsucht and thought it was the second one because when I went to buy Rammstein all they had was Sehnsucht.

At any rate, their sound has changed, well, not changed, evolved.. It has kept all of the old feeling and sound and carried on to a higher plateau of musical excellence. And yet their older albums are still stand alone in their own incomparable excellence, somehow undwarfed by even this new accomplishment in excellence.

From the well incorporated "techno" effects, seemingly to always be precisely directed, to the grinding rifs that drive the sound deep into your mind, even deeper into your soul, the unstoppable and almost singularly melodic rhythm drummed out in a blackened fury, the howling guitar to the deep, guttural angry lyrics and tone of Lindemann, Rammstein's excellence is unrivaled.

Rammstein is the epitome of hard-core, there is little, if anything that rivals it in sheer amplitude. What's more, unlike a good deal of loud music it does not compromise the integrity of the sound for is volume and intensity. Rammstien needs compensate for nothing. They have it all. The driving speed, the deep and fully emotional sound.

The more I learn about and hear Rammsteing the more I like them. Of the 32 CD's I own, beyond a shadow of a doubt, Herzeleid, Sehnsucht,, Mutter and Live Aus Berlin are doubtlessly my favorites. It is more though, than them being my favorite band. I have many bands that I like, but for every band except Rammstein, there are song I do not like. Rammstein has yet to produce something I did not feel privileged to listen to and I am beginning to believe they are incapable of producing inferior music.
I am unable to pick a mere favorite of their songs, or even a favorite album. It is all gold.

The "language barrier" for those of you who do not speak German is really non-existent. There are enough web-sites that have translated the words. But, more importantly, you do not need to understand the words to enjoy the heavy metal symphony that is Rammstein and to understand the sheer intensity of the emotion.
Rammstein is a veritable unstoppable symphony of sound and emotion .

My only strict opinion on Rammstein is that it is only done justice when played loudly. To mute is a crime. It's akin to looking at the Mona Lisa with a stick pocking in your eye.

So, if you want to ... receive the very best that heavy metal has to offer buy it. If you want to remain confined to a musical paradigm, don't.

Personally, I would have given Rammstein six or even seven starts were it possible to do so. Five stars seem unjustly limiting on such a musical accomplishment as Rammstein, but thus is rating system.
(note that this my opinion of Rammstein without ever having been able to see them live.)

Free Music Review: Mutter
Hit: 5 Stars

Almost four years after their massive breakthrough "Sehnsucht", Rammstein followed their success with "Mutter". The album is a departure from the sound which the band began in Herzeleid and perfected in Sehnsucht, as it follows a much more Orchestral, Gothic, and Epic sound over the Electronica-drenched Techno-Metal of the past. It follows a path suggested by songs such as "Klavier" and "Spiel Mit Mir" The change is evident even in the very first seconds of the album, as the explosive opener "Mein Herz Brennt" is driven by a powerful string section. While the album is less heavy than the previous (There's nothing as heavy as "Bestrafe Mich" or "Buck Dich", except for maybe "Rein Raus"), it still fairly METAL record, filled with pounding riffs that are effectively countered by beautiful melodies and arrangements.

Song by Song review:

1) Mein Herz Brennt: A hell of an opener, this track announces Rammstein's new fascination with orchestras complementing their unique brand of Metal. The chorus is one of the best examples of strings used in metal I've ever heard. Trully a powerful song. 9/10

2) Links 2 3 4: A song with a driving rythm and a military beat, this was the first Rammstein song I heard and it turned me into a fan. It's fairly heavy and the soaring chorus is great! 8.5/10

3) Sonne: A fan favourite, and definitely one of the best Rammstein songs. Sonne combines a stomping riff and quiet verses with an increadible heart-stopping chorus and melody. The outro is amazing. If you're doubting buying the album, get a hold of this song; it'll erase all doubt. A Gem. 10/10

4) Ich Will: A crowd-interaction song that is perfect for concert settings! This insanely anthemic track is another highlight of the album. 9.5/10

5) Feuer Frei!: This track is most reminiscent of the Herzeleid era, kind of similar to Asche Zu Asche (but not as good). It is a fast kind of catchy single, but one of the lesser songs on the album. 6/10

6) Mutter: The title track is another heart-stopping song. A power-ballad if there ever was one, the verses sound filled with sadness (and the lyrics reinforce it), the chorus riff is amazing, and the bridges are increadible. The orchestration is top-notch 10/10

7) Spielhur: The "epic" of the album, a song with very sad lyrics and creepy choruses with melancholic instrumentation. However, it's a little too slow and long. 7/10

8) Zwitter: Fast and catchy, but nothing particularly special about this song. 7/10

9) Rein Raus: A fairly heavy song, it has some funky samples of sex noises (the title means "In-Out", if that tells you anything). The melodic parts are kinda nice. In my opinion, Spielhur, Zwitter, and this song are the low-points of the album. Not really bad, but simply not on par with such genius as Sonne or Mutter. 7/10

10) Adios: The band gets back on track with this fast song, which is sort of a better version of Zwitter, it's deeper and sadder-sounding. The transitions from quiet acoustic to heavy explosion are great. 9/10

11) Nebel: The ballad-closer Nebel finishes the album in a deeply sad, melancholic song. The strings accentuate the dark tone. It's all very epic and gothic. A great closer. 8.5/10

If you liked their newest release "Reise, Reise" and still don't have Mutter, then definitely get it. If you're a fan of Sehnsucht and Herzeleid, give it a try, it's different, but decidedly RAMMSTEIN, and decidedly AWESOME.

Free Music Review: Achtung! Das Ist Rammstein time, jah?
Hit: 5 Stars

No, the title of the album is not what this group does here. It's German for "mother." Be prepared for eleven songs of hard-driving crunchy extreme techno-metal. Well, two of the songs are ballad, but still... I always get stirred up (in the positive sense) whenever I hear many of the songs here.

"Mein Herz Brennt" bursts into a Led-Zep Kashmir-type power beats with symphonic backing, The title is sung with such climactic agony, following as it does the following English lyrics from one of the stanzas: "Now dear children, pay close attention/
I am the voice of the kiss/I have brought something along for you/A bright light in the heavens/My heart burns." Note, I'm naturally using English lyrics for quotes.

The opening militaristic marching steps of "Links 234" brought up an image of Bismarck's troops marching into Austria. The beat is indeed martial when singing "Links zwo drei vier." However, the song is about hearts and whether they can be stolen, outspoken, pure, and actually to take the place of the brain. This is my favourite song here.

If anything, people will know how to count to nine in German with "Sonne." Ready? It's ein, zwei, drei, vier, funf, sechs, seven, acht, neun. Inbetween the numbers, the lyrics "Hier komme dit sonne" means "Here Comes The Sun". The waifish wailing voice near the end is a cool touch to a powerful song.

"Ich Will" means "I Want" and it begins with: "I want you to have faith in me
I want you to believe in me... etc" The same lyrics are whispered except it's now "We want you to have faith in us.. etc." We, instead of I. The music is martial in the same tempo as "Links 234."

My second favourite song is "Feuer Frei" with its ferocious "bang bang" chorus. Those of you who saw XXX will recognize this as the song Rammstein's playing when the NSA agent is killed by Yorgi's men and carried over the heads of the crowd. This is one extreme song, as evidenced by the lead stanza: "Rebuked are those who know pain/From the fire that burns the skin/I shine a light in my face/My loud yell (I yell loudly)/Open fire!" Open fire indeed!

The title track is a downbeat ballad about a sad boy who never had a mother around for him. One lyric goes: "The mother who never gave birth to me/I have sworn tonight
[that] I will send her a disease/and later drown her in the river." Whoa! The other ballad here is the closing "Hallelujah" which has a sweeping symphonic backing. Looking at the lyrics, I wonder if the theme is akin to the recent Catholic scandal.

Other short notes: "Zwitter" is a crunching song about a happy hermaphrodite, and the conflicting dynamic of being two genders in one person. "Rein raus" meaning "in out" is a song about, well, put it this way, the man is the rider, and guess who is the horse? And "Adios" chronicles the final moments of an addict who overdoses.
Oh, and here is a translation of the song titles in English I got from some the Rammsteinsite as well as the lyrics.

Mein Herz Brennt = My heart burns
Links 234 = Left 234
Sonne = Sun
Ich Will = I Want
Feuer Frei = Fire Free
Mutter = Mother
Spieluhr = Music Box
Zwitter = Hermaphrodite
Rein Raus = In Out
Adios = Bye
Nebel = Mist
Hallelujah = Hallelujah

One of the best industrial-metal albums, and indeed metal albums of all time.
