Free Music Notes for MutterFree Music Review: Rammstein is grown and matured. Great album! Hit: 5 Stars
Since Herzeleid hit the shelves I was hooked on the heavy hitting sound of Rammstein. I've been waiting for this release for a while now and here are some of my thoughts.Mutter is a very sophisticated album. It's well balanced in terms of sound, meaning that it's not 100% hardcore all the way thru. Some tracks like "Links 234" are very hard hitting and is the kind of stuff you'd expect from Rammstein. Then there's others like "Mein Herz Brennt" that includes a symphony-like sound, adding an incredible depth and sadness to the track while keeping the gutiar crunch and metal sound mixed in very well. There is so much depth to this album! Which is partly due to the keyboardist who adds the right sound effect/synth at exactly the right time. The guitar riffs are mostly different as well, which adds to the freshness of Mutter. The lyrics are alot more heartfelt and poetic then the previous albums. However, "Zwitter" (poking fun at hermaphodites funny as hell, go read the english lyrics) is pretty much the only track that's kind of sick if taken liturally. "Feuer Frei!" isn't as bad of a track as some make it sound. It's fast, heavy and hard. I had the volume turned up pretty high by the time I got to this track and i nearly swerved off the road while driving because it started out soft, and then all of a sudden there was a guitar/drum punch and it scared the Stufing out of me! Every track is great and I am fully satisfied with Mutter. However if your looking for 100% Hardcore all the way thru, you might be just a LITTLE bit (and i mean a little) disappointed. "Nobel" for instance is pretty much a laid back track which might not appease you. The rest aren't nearly as slow as this one is. Along with many of the commenters, I agree Rammstien has matured greatly with Mutter. It's very refined and extremely well exacuted, maintaining their practically trademarked sound and yet blowing a big gust of fresh air to your ears. I can't pick a favorite song, mainly because I like them all. The tracks fit together like a puzzle to create a wonderful album. In short: it's DEFINATELY worth the money, It has growh in sound yet still the same Rammstein you've always known, lyrically superior then their previous albums, and it's very well mixed and great in sound. You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Rammstein's Third Time A Real Charm... Hit: 5 Stars
Rammstein have, over many years of relentless touring and stellar album after stellar album, proven themselves a gigantic force in the metal music scene. The big success of their breakthrough album SEHNSUCHT proved to many that they were not going anywhere anytime soon (last year's ROSENROT certainly continued to prove the importance of their existence), and it was time for Rammstein to make their third collection of catchy and monstrous metal operas. Indeed, MUTTER's first track, "Mein Herz Brent" ("My Heart Burns") is like a gigantic opera: full-throttle thick metal guitars, a grand backing of strings, Till Lindemann's theatric vocal grandeur, and the hard-hitting rhythm section of drummer Christoph Schneider and bassist Oliver Riedel. Guitarists Paul Landers and Richard Kruspe continue to remain two of metal's best axemen, and Lindemann has already proven to be a secret weapon of Rammstein with his vocal theatrics. Everything comes together to make MUTTER ("MOTHER") another grand album from Germany's finest.
"Links 234" ("Left 234") is another catchy slice of German metal that cuts through even the thickest layers, further enhancing this collection. The marching feet and stomp of the drums give it a militaristic beat. "Sonne" ("Sun") blends melody and grace with thundering guitars and beats. The gentle and almost ballad-esque metal of the title track breaks briefly into more of the soft side that Rammstein can break out without incident. Even the closing track, "Nebel" ("Mist"), incorporates piano into its volatile mixture, complete with Bobo's enchanting background vocals (she was brilliant on the well-crafted hit "Engel"). But Rammstein get down to harder dynamics on the crunchy stomp of "Adios" ("Goodbye") and the wild "Freuer Frei!" ("Fire at will!"). They even add a child's voice to the enchanting metal of "Spieluhr" ("Music Box"). Rammstein have really continued to craft excellent albums, and MUTTER proves to be no disappointment.
Rammstein have longevity in their bright future thanks to solid efforts like MUTTER and SEHNSUCHT, and REISE, REISE and ROSENROT proved to be stellar collections. MUTTER is only further proof that while not from the U.S. metal scene, Rammstein continues to remain an important piece of the metal music puzzle. Ich will more Rammstein!!
Free Music Review: A fine method to this "madness". Hit: 5 Stars
I am predominantly a fan of classical, opera, and R&B music, and have not, in the past, dug much rock music because the rock bands I had given my time to listen to did not evince any sonic individuality in their songs --- unlike the way all Ludwig van Beethoven symphonies, for example, share a common sonic/stylistic signature. On the contrary, most rock/metal albums sound like a sequence of hastily assembled noise-chunks with absolutely no art narrative to link them. This is not the case with Rammstein. I first heard them via "Engel" on the "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" movie soundtrack, and since then I have become a firm fan. They are the only rock/industrial act I listen to, btw. Like I'd hinted above, what attracts a classical-music fan like me to the Rammstein sound is the (very) evident stylistic cohesiveness and sense of musical direction which pervade all three of their albums. Imho, all three albums - Herzeleid, Sehnsucht and Mutter - ARE modern operas backed by a heavy metal/industrial musical background. And nowhere is this more so than in "Mutter" - their latest offering. I feel that this time around the band has truly gelled into a taut, cocksure musical unit, with the result that "Mutter" boasts a far surer sonic architecture than the other two albums put together. Each track flows seamlessly into its successor. For people just getting into Rammstein, I reckon they may initially find "Mutter" a tad "bland" in comparison with "Herzeleid" or "Sehnsucht", but that is ONLY because their tracks are more musically electic/diverse and so do not complement and merge into one another as effortlessly as those on "Mutter". "Mutter" is one of those albums which yields their treasures only after several listenings. It is more satisfying and musically cogent than "Herzeleid" (itself an already outstanding album!!!) My personal faves on this marvellous rock opera:- Mein herz brennt Mutter Feuer Frei Ich will Zwitter Five stars all the way! (PS: for those would summarily dismiss this modern work of art on the basis of a single listening session, I humbly advise you to do to yourself what Rammstein recommends in "Zwitter". :-) :-) :-)
Free Music Review: The best album of the new millenium!! Hit: 5 Stars
I discovered the briallance of Rammstein and this great album through a friend who took me on a tour of his copy of Mutter. After only hearing a few songs, I had to have more! The music from this group, and especially this album is just awesome! Its like industrial, goth, pop, and progressive all in one. I liked the sound of their music when I first heard those notes, but as soon as I heard those first lyrics from their lead singer a smile etched across my face and an air of mystery clouded my thoughts. What was that singer saying? I couldn't understand him. He bellowed out something unintelligible in his baritone-like vocals. I thought this was a joke. It sounded satanic. But my friend made it clear to me that this was a German group and the singer was singing in German. I still didn't care though, because the music and the vocals sounded so good, i didn't care what language they were in. After hearing only a sample of this great album, I had to have my very own copy. And the next day I went out and bought one. I hadn't purchased a regular rock-band album in years, because I was so fed up with the alternative junk that was spewing around for so long. But here finally came along something different. After listening to the whole album in its entirety I knew this was a masterpiece. The first song is one of the best opening songs i've ever heard. There are plenty of pop songs through out this album to just chillback to, and there are lots of songs to turn up your stereo to and just rock out all night long. There's at least one beautiful soft-ballad in the form of the title track Mutter (Mother). All of the songs on this album are terrific. Through out the album soprano voices are used against the lead singer's baritone voice, and it just sounds great. As for the German language--I couldn't care less for what is being said in the songs. I'm the type of person who looks at the sound of the music before the lyrics. Besides that just adds to the mystery and discovery. Buy the album for the music, and then figure out what is being said later. If the world ended tomorrow your only regret would be that you didn't get Rammstein's Mutter! That's how great this album is--get it now!
Free Music Review: Out of four CDs, I'd have to say this one is the best. Hit: 5 Stars
Maybe I just have a thing for slow, sad metal songs like "Nebel" (which illustrates the death of a loved one on a foggy day), or "Mutter", (which has been said to be about a child that never lives to see its mother). Or maybe its the awesome power of "Sonne" which inspired a whole new philosophy for me. Maybe its the synth effects in "Mein Herz Brennt", or perhaps the controversy of "Rein Raus". Out of Rammstein's four cds, this one just seems a notch above the rest, which is not to say that Live aus Berlin, Sehnsucht and Herzeleid are not great (in which case they are excellent). "Mutter" just has a mystique about it that seems to fly a little higher than the other three. Needless to say that Rammstein is controversial, but that is what makes them so different, and in my world, difference rules all. If you're a first time listener going to buy a Rammstein CD, try this one first. It gives you a taste of slow, fast, and moderate, and a glimpse at the awesome effects of Christian "Flake"(Flak-uh) Lorenz, the wide voice range of Till Lindemann, the skillful drumming of Christoph "Doom" Schneider, the distinct bass playing of Oliver Reidel, and the great result of teamwork on guitar demonstrated by Richard Kruspe-Bernstein (Lead Guitar), and Paul Landers (Rhythm Guitar). Besides the fact that Rammstein is one of the most clever bands I've ever listened to, in chronological order, each album gets better and better. I bought Mutter first, then Sehnsucht, Herzeleid, then Live aus Berlin, and again, of all four of Rammstein's CDs, I'd have to say that Mutter is a touch above the other three. As a closing, a note to new Rammstein fans:If everyone read and believed what the press and critics told them, music would be composed boybands and various other cleanies. Read between the lines, and do some research on Rammstein. Don't follow the critics' words. They can't even get the translation of "Heirate Mich" (Marry Me, not Worship Me, thank you very much) correct. So again, read in between the lines and enjoy Rammstein for who they really are. One of the most clever bands in existance.
