The Ramones *****

Hey Ho Lets Go...and so it began that start of something so amazing nothing will ever come close again. The Ramones single handedly created one of the greatest albums ever, along with one of the greatest musical movements in the history of rock n' roll. The bands debut has gone down in history as one of the most criticly aclaimed albums of all time. It is teh album that gave the New York punk movement the notoriaty it desereved.

Joeys slurred lyrics and vocal delivery are classic and signature only to him. He sings with his Brooklyn accent. Dee Dee las down some killer bass lines, Tommy plays the original punk drum beat, and Johnny plays the prototypical punk guitar. While many of the songs do sound the same they are all excellent. The three chord format works just as good for The Ramones as it does for AC/DC. The thing about The Ramones that blows my mind is how they managed not to become the biggest band of all time. Their songs were a hell of a lot catchier then even The Beatles' and The Beachboys together. They dont sound bad or play bad so how they managed to stay under the radar for so long and never really truly make it big until after they broke up is beyond me.

The album is fantastic from the first guitar chug of the imortal 'Blitzkrieg Bop' to the ringing of the amps at the end of 'Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World.' Every song is catchy and easy to relate to for any teenager. 'Blitzkrieg Bop' 'Beat On The Brat' and 'Judy Is A Punk' all went on to become Ramones and punk music classics. Songs like 'Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue' went on to have countless polls, magazines, and lists named after it. 'Havana Affair' inspired many a band to get together and while it may not have done that for the Red Hot Chili Peppers the band did cover the song as a tribute to the late Joey Ramone, and I might add they did an amazing cover of the song.

The Ramones will not only go down in history as one of punks great bands but as one of all musics greatest bands ever, and this is one of if not the greatest debut albums ever, sure to be on any list of the 100 greatest albums of all time. 100 albums may not seem like that big of a deal to some but when you think of all the albums ever made in rock n' roll history that is a monsterous acheivement. This is recomended to everyone from Billy Joel and Beachboy fans to fans of hardcore punk like Bad Brains, and The Casualties.

Free Music Review: The Ramones in all their glorious simplicity!
Hit: 5 Stars

Countless great albums were released in the '70s, but by 1977 something was missing in the rock and roll universe. Rock was big, glammy, and excessive, lack all the raw simplicity that made it great in the first place. Enter the Ramones. The Ramones brought rock back to its raw roots, and at the same time made the greatest punk rock album EVER!

One thing that makes the Ramones debut album so great and legendary is that it is just so much fun! All 14 songs on the original album is great (With the exception of I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend), and could easily fit into a DJ's party list. (Hell if you go to the party and Hey Ho Let's Go is not heard, it ain't worth your time!) Joey Ramone is the image (not to mention the voice) of punk rock, leather clad, ripped jeans, sunglasses and all, and here he is as vibrant as he ever was. Johnny Ramone's three chord riffs on this album may be simple, but there's so catchy and irrestible that no one will complain. (Its a shame that his guitar gets pushed to the background on this remix)

Now on to the bonus tracks. The eight tracks are great, though not necessarily essential. The demos (with the exception of I Don't Care, which later appeared on Rocket to Russia) are pretty much the same as their original album counterparts, though I Don't Wanna Be Learned and You Should Never have Opened That Door are classics. However for those who already own the original album, this new edition may not be an essential buy.

I'd also like to note that not only did this album gave every punk band of the past 25 years its job (including its peers the Sex Pistols and the Clash, who both released great albums later that year) it also was a profound influence on New Wave Metal (which included the likes of Judas Priest and Motorhead), Speed/Thrash Metal (Metallica, Megadeath, Slayer), and grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam). So if you are a fan of any of the aformentioned band this is an important buy for you, so you can learn where they got their tricks.

In conclusion this is without a doubt one of the most important albums in the history of rock. From the first track (the great, great, GREAT, Blitzkrieg Bop) it grabs you and refuses to let you go, and by the end you are blown away by the terrific vibe that can come out of primitive lyrics and blindingly fast three chord assaults. You cannot call yourself a punk rock fan (or much of a rock and roll fan) until you have heard this several times. So don't wait. Get this TODAY!

Free Music Review: Eponymous debut from the most influential punk band in the world!
Hit: 5 Stars

Amazing album! This album shows everything that's good about punk. There is amazing songs galore on this album. The bonus tracks are cool too. Here's a runthrough:
Blitzkrieg Bop-This used to be my favorite Ramones song before I owned this album. Then, all I knew was LEAVE HOME (another great album) and some singles. But now I realize that songs like '53rd & 3rd' and 'Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World' surpass this song. Still great though.
Beat on the Brat-Another good one. True rockin' Ramones.
Judy is a Punk-GREAT!! One of the lines goes 'perhaps they'll die' ironically Judy and Jackie who were real-life fans of the Ramones did actually die young in a plane crash.
I Wanna be Your Boyfriend-This is a bit bubble-gummy for my taste but it turns out to be an alright song.
Chain Saw-Was written after the band saw THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE. This is really good.
Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue-The first of a long line of drug songs. Not as good as the infamous one 'Chinese Rock' from END OF THE CENTURY but still good.
I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement-This one's an ode to B horror movies.
Loudmouth-Surprisingly mean for the Ramones. The whole song is only four lines: You're a loud mouth baby, You better shut it up, I'm gonna beat you up, 'Cause you're a loudmouth babe.
Havana Affair-Great! Nothing but pure rock 'n' roll!
Listen to My Heart-Is another classic Ramones song.
53rd & 3rd-This one is the first in a 4-track line of the best Ramones songs I've ever heard so far. (I only know this one, LEAVE HOME, and END OF THE CENTURY)
Let's Dance-A great cover song. Definately better than 'California Sun' the cover from LEAVE HOME.
I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You-Great!!!! Nothin else to say.
Today Your Love Tomorrow the World-HOLY !#%&(_+)*^$@ THIS IS AN AMAZING SONG!!! THIS IS MY CURRENT NUMBER ONE SONG EVER!
Of the bonus tracks only four of the eight aren't on the original RAMONES. Here they are:
I Don't Care-Uggh. C'mon boys u can do better!
I Can't Be-Thankyou! Very much better. A true punk classic.
I Don't Wanna be Learned, I Don't Wanna be Tamed-Very short. Very good.
You Should Never Have Opened That Door-Great song. This will appear on LEAVE HOME the next album so I don't know why they put this on. But hey, I think it's great.
Johnny-Guitar
Joey-Vocals
Dee Dee-Bass
Tommy-Drums

Free Music Review: Unashamedly Awesome
Hit: 5 Stars

I've always held in my mind the idea that the Ramones are without a doubt the band that changed the music scene forever. Since the bands first performance in the famed CBGB's club they have, over the decades, gained a wall of recognition as being something new and influential for the time. Around 1974 when the Ramones first started out, the mainstream scene mainly comprised of cheesy pop songs and mellowed hippie rock. The Ramones were something different in their frantic playing of the instruments and raw vocals, they were simply a band that didn't care to create an image, and they just liked making the music they wanted. The Ramones spearheaded the Punk movement and lived the ideology of being original in everything you do and not conforming to a boring cliché idea of what is considered a good performance.

This album allows casual music fans to enjoy a taste of some of the Ramones best and most energetic music they have created over the years. The first song off this album is the fantastically energetic Blitzkrieg Bop which presents such a forceful sound and pace that makes you wish that, if you weren't around during this uprising, that you actually were around to be a part of it. The line "Hey Ho, Let's Go" from that song is synonymous with the whole forcefulness of what the punk ideology developed into. It morphed into this "get out of my way" aggression and the philosophy of "I'm better than you because I'm original." Maybe this wasn't the intention of the Ramones, but when bands such as the Sex Pistols came to mainstream attention, that aggression was certainly projected and it definitely won the war for individuality which was started by the Ramones.

The sound of the Ramones to many may seem quite confused and disorganised which is partly their appeal as the sound is raw and untainted by the corrupting intrusion of a computer. This is certainly a marvellous album and my only regret is it doesn't contain the brilliant Joey Ramone solo track, the cover of the Louis Armstrong classic "What a wonderful world."

Top 5 are:
1. Blitzkrieg Bop
2. Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue
3. I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend
4. Judy Is A Punk
5. Let's Dance

Free Music Review: The shot heard 'round the world
Hit: 5 Stars

In retrospect, it's easy to overlook how revolutionary and different this album was when it hit the streets in the second half of the '70s. Just play a Yes album, a Styx album, or an Emerson, Lake & Palmer album beside it to try to get an understanding.

Recorded for barely over $6,000, The Ramones' debut album broke all the rules of pompous '70s rock and a new type of music was "invented" in the process: punk rock. Not very different from '50s and '60s rock, just a lot louder and faster. No solos, just a bunch of power chords and catchy melodies.

Not counting the bonus songs, there are 14 songs on this album. None of them are longer than 2:32, and many of them come in at under two minutes. It's all over in less than half an hour. But there's more packed into those 30 minutes than many bands pack into an entire career.

The sound quality is very raw. However, the remastering has made the lows a bit lower and everything a bit crisper, making everything seem even more powerful than before. Dee Dee's bass is shoved into the left speaker, Johnny's guitar screams from the right, and Tommy's drums thud relentlessly in the background. On top of this, Joey spits out his lyrics with his unique accent and equally unique delivery.

And even though this album would have been a landmark just for the aforementioned qualities, the songwriting is strong as well. Everyone knows "Blitzkrieg Bop (Hey Ho Let's Go)," but every one of these tracks is fantastic. "Judy is a Punk" is my personal favorite, with three verses, three choruses and an instrumental break all packed into 90 seconds.

After this album was released, a whole new batch of bands started up. Suddenly, it didn't matter if you couldn't play like Keith Emerson or Steve Howe, all that mattered was how much you believed in yourself and your music. The Ramones were probably the first somewhat popular band to use its limitations in a positive way, and many other soon followed: The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Talking Heads, U2, etc. Had it not been for The Ramones, these bands might not have formed, let alone have been signed to a major record label.

Quite simply, one of the most important - and fun - albums ever made.
