Free Music Notes for Ramones (Dlx)Free Music Review: First REAL Punk album. Hit: 5 Stars
After hearing of the death of another Ramone, Johnny falling to cancer this time, I decided to write a review of the very first true punk album. The album that launched a thousand punk bands. Some good, most stunk. Even good new bands like the Riverdales, who obviously are updated Ramones, can't touch the Ramones. There's not a lot that can be said about this debut album that hasn't been said. It's short, fast (for it's time), and to the point. It is the album that epitomized what the Ramones were about. 1:30- 2:00 songs. No Solos. Topics that 1976 youth could identify with: Sniffing glue, trying to get chicks, random violence...being bored. The songs and lyrics were unintentionally, (or maybe intentionally..who really knows with the Ramones) funny. Titles like Beat on the Brat, I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement, Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue, I Don't Wanna Walk Around with You. Bottom line though, the songs were all infectious. No one had heard 60's rock n' roll performed with a snear like this before. No one ever had a guitar that sounded like Johnny. No one ever had a voice like Joey. No one ever played drums in the time that Tommy did. And, no one started every song by yelling "1-2-3-4!" or wrote the type of lyrics like Dee Dee did.
This album is 5 -stars, but not as high on my scale as the brilliant Road to Ruin and almost as good Rocket to Russia. It gets 5 stars alone for it's impact and importance in rock history. Without it, you never would have had the Clash, the Sex Pistols, X, or any other punk band. It really is a perfect album. It suits the average person's attention span perfectly, with fourteen songs coming in at less than a half hour. The tunes are just great and guaranteed to have your neighbour pounding on the walls of your apartment. And the album cover is one of the best in rock history- all four Ramones in their leather jackets, ripped jeans and running shoes, looking partly bored and partly tough. Little Tommy standing on his toes so as to not look quite as short next to the lanky Joey.
Thanks for the document bruddas!
Free Music Review: Speed, Toughness, Rudeness, And Stupidity At Its Best Hit: 5 Stars
While The Sex Pistols were exploring the revolutionary sound that has been dubbed, "punk", in England, The Ramones were doing the same in the States. The Ramones however added their own flavor to the quickly growing phenomenon. While The Sex Pistols were all about rebellion, anarchy, and destroying the British government, The Ramones were all about simple four chord rockers with incredibly simple and stupid lyrics regarding the things that made rock famous in the first place; girls, dancing, and dope. The songs are very short (only a few clock in at over two and a half minutes) and the whole album is only a half hour long but thats OK since if it had been any longer the whole thing would become old and redundant. Maybe its because its the Ramones that are doing this but somehow it all works out just fine.
There's no real opening, the album just explodes with the three or four chord assault of, "Blitzkreig Bop", which has become one of the most recognizable sports anthems ever recorded. The second track is just Joey Ramone talking about beating up a kid for two whole minutes. Some tracks like, "Now I Want To Sniff Some Glue", are just the same four silly lines repeated over and over again but the steroid driven guitar riff and the fact that its only a minute and a half long make the song quite enjoyable. There are a few suprises such as the almost romantic ditty, "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend", and the somewhat serious drug dealing number, "53rd And 3rd" but most every other song follows the same basic formula. A few songs have some politcal values that somewhat rival the Sex Pistols but the rest is all about girls and parties. The album ends with Joey yelling over and over again, "Today Your Love! Tomorrow The World!", and then it all comes crashing to a hault.
If your looking for the long sophisticated suites and writings of Pink Floyd or Genesis forget it, your not going to find it here. If you're just looking for a good time as well as the reason for the fuss over the punk revolution of the late 70s then this is a prime purchase.
Free Music Review: first true "Punk" band Hit: 5 Stars
"Ramones" is an album that succeeds with what seems to be a simple formula. The three chord rock, Joey's one of a kind voice, and somewhat simple beats to the songs come together to form one excellent set of music. This is the band and album that started the "punk movement". While some may say Iggy or the Who were the first, the Ramones are the first to embrace the punk sound and attitude.
While on the surface their music may seem to be a simple combination of bubble gum pop rock and simple lyrics underneath the Ramones actually had a complex style and revived true rock n roll. Without them music may have never got out of a stage of Zeppelin wannabes. The energy the band threw into their music was a combination that inspired rebellion and true rock.
The album booms off to a start with the chant of "HEY! HO! LETS GO!" in "Blitzkrieg Bop" and doesn't stop until the closing of the album with "Today your love, Tomorrow the World". (With a few pit stops including the mellow "I wanna be your Boyfriend").
The Album includes 7 demos and the single version of "Blitzkrieg Bop". These give the feeling of the raw, stripped down, version of the Ramones.
Overall this band and album ignited future punk band such as the "Sex Pistols" and "the Clash". (please ignore the moron who claims the band to be "Metal" and any others who bash them and claim greenday as the true punk band. Ps- green day is a good punk band)
Best tracks include: Blitzkrieg Bop, Beat on the Brat, Judy is a punk, I wanna be your boyfriend, Now I wanna sniff some glue, Havana affair, 53rd and 3rd
Enjoy and be sure to then check out other Ramones albums such as Road to Ruin and Rocket to Russia. Then checkout "Never mind the Bullocks, Heres the Sex Pistols" and various Clash albums.
Free Music Review: I don't like punk usually, but i like the ramones Hit: 5 Stars
First, i hated most punk, (i don't consider RCHP punk- even BSSM- 'cause they're more funk and regular rock) because it promoted stupid politics by undergraduates and most fans hated u2 without even listening to their energetic debut "boy". When listening to this album, everything that i was used to listening to was missing. There was no skilled production, no expensive guitars, and no robert plant (led zeppelin). Instead there were simplistic, repetative beats, and a bunch of New Yorkers with Faux- English accents. I thought to myself after only picking it from the store shelf (i should have gotten "Stiucky Fingers"- Rolling Stones). However, when i listened to this, i was gald i got this instead. The simplicity did not kill the songs, but in fact, made the songs even better. The fake english accent helps when singing songs like the first two tracks i'm tooo lazy to mention, Chainsaw, and just every freakin' little original track on the album. In fact, the songs are meant to go together. Whats original with this group is that their not really that anarchist DESTROY stuff that i usually assiociate punk with, they're just low budget. They may have "Now I Want To Sniff Some Glue" or gang violence in "50 3rd and 3rd," and the drive by in Blitzreig Bop but they also have the love song "i wanna be your boyfriend" or "listen to my heart." However, I still have one more note on the fake english accent by joey. by listening to other songs on other albums it seemed ruined by overdubbing.this band is also an influence for u2, and i don't mean stereotypically u2, i mean early u2. This is an instant classic, and if you like rock in general, you're probably going to like this. This is not only "punk", but classic rock stripped of all its material excess.
Free Music Review: My Personal Fave! Hit: 5 Stars
The debut Ramones album reigns as my personal favorite, although all their other 70s recordings come in a close 2nd place. No doubt it's an "apples & oranges" call amongst any Ramones fans, but if this aging music fanboy were to try and introduce the Ramones legacy to some Blink182'd youngsters who never heard of these legends before their time, this is definitely the album I would point them toward. The music is raw yet catchy, and in my uneducated opinion best embodies The Ramones desire to play fun, energetic rock & roll with lyrics that carry no overbearing messages. These songs have the innocent beat of early rock, but coarse, edgy and fun lyrics that were shocking for 1976. My personal favorite come from "Havana Affair," "PT Boat On the Way To Havana/I Used to make my living, man, pickin' the bananas!" with a close 2nd place favorite being from "Judy Is a Punk:" "They both went down to Frisco/Joined the SLA/ Ohh I don't know why/Ohh I don't know why/Perhaps they'll die!" Any group who can take a tagline from the folk novelty "There Was an Old Lady" and modernize it into something all their own is A-OK by me! Dig into these songs, this album is solid from beginning to end. The bonus tracks are plenty of fun for avid Ramones fans like me, but I'm not certain they 'll offer much for those who are just getting familiar with the group. What do studied and accomplished musicians think of The Ramones? It doesn't matter; really, it doesn't. The Ramones made music that was fun, and you'd catch it in your head faster than a winter cold. Their music is the ultimate audio-adrenaline rush, and no matter your age or status,I highly recommend this particular CD in the morning along with a serious cup of coffee.....BLAST OFF! HEY-HO! LET'S GO!
