Free Music Notes for Harps & AngelsFree Music Review: great as every--maybe better Hit: 5 Stars
Randy Newman is a national treasure. His music (lyrics) have always been highly engaging--humorous, serious, intelligent, satirical, insightful, lyrical, relevent, and irreverant. Harps and Angels is no exception.
Harps and Angels is as good as his best and rooted in today's world and national issues. If you like Sail Away, Short People, Leave Your Hat On, Rednecks, My Old Kentucky Home, Big Hat No Cattle, Riders in the Rain or any other of his songs that strike a chord in you, buy this CD! It has "out loud" laughs, "oh my he said that" smiles, "I am so glad I heard this" moments throughout. The songs each tell a different story about a different thing about life in 2008. Politics, immigration, education, family, growing old, and and employment.
It is double shot of vintage Randy Newman with a twist of today. It is smart. It is fun. It is exactly what the music industry needs to do more of. One listen is not nearly enough. Thank You Randy!
Free Music Review: Easy Street Hit: 5 Stars
I suppose people either like him or they don't. He has actually been remarkably consistent. The production of the recordings has continually improved both instrumentally and technically, but the movie- based, Basin Street sound has remained the same as has his acerbic wit and touching emotionality. Over the years of course he has matured, so if he appealed to you when you were young, he should appeal now that you have matured too. He's always been too richly ironic for the great American average man, and he hasn't compromised at all. What a wonderful thing when intelligent sensitivity gets expressed! I mean, really, the density of stupidity blaring at you from every direction is astounding.
I think the best song is "Easy Street", which, without hitting you over the head, depicts the present day American dream of life, in which you are always comfortable and always important, "you think anyone's ever gonna say 'No' to you?"
Free Music Review: Well Worth the Wait Hit: 5 Stars
My friend Pris and I saw Randy at Carnegie Hall two winter's back, and we were both slavering in antipation about this release. Well...Randy kept us slavering long enuff...now is the time to assess the wait...
was it worth it, Newman fans?
Aye Aye! Eye Eye!
All new songs...new songbook to add to the classics...every song a gem...
kudos to Randy and his producer for keepin' things under wraps for two years,,
it's a demarcation line for a talent that has never lost his song writing luster or uncanny ability to come up with a lyric that is entirely original...New Orleans roots shine through...
The quiet sarcasm is also evident..nothing heavy handed...he delivers the goods without a trace of rancor...
The best songmeister still standing...
Lonely at the top?
Mebbe, but Randy..you da gent!!
BEK
Free Music Review: Five stars for "Feels Like Home" and "Losing You" Hit: 5 Stars
This is a two-song album for me. "Feels Like Home" is one of the most touching and beautiful ballads ever written, and "Losing You" is a close second; the rest of the stuff is hardly listenable.
Newman insists on putting politics into his music, of all the things in the world, but he is no Tom Lehrer, not by light years.
In fact, I would be delighted if all of our gifted artists would be content with the fact that they are (unlike me) gifted artists, and resist the temptation to abuse their moment in the spotlight to spout nonsense and absurd political views. They (the artists) don't know anything more than the rest of us, and frequently know a lot LESS. Richard Wagner springs to mind, but the list is very long... VERY long. Don Henley of the Eagles is way up there. But do your own research. How about John Lennon ("Imagine") ???
Free Music Review: This is a fun and interesting disc by Randy Newman Hit: 5 Stars
I love the music of Randy Newman. Every track on this disc is great. He is a good singer and one of the best piano players I've ever heard. "Harps and Angels" is Newman's idea of what he imagines heaven will be like. "Easy Street" is a tribute to the city of New Orleans. "Laugh and Be Happy" is a very fun song. Newman makes the piano come alive with exuberant playing here. I love the asian sound of "Korean Parents". This is such a funny song. "A Piece Of The Pie" is Newman's take on the shrinking of the middle class. "A Few Words In Defense Our Country" is a song about how our political leaders today are not as bad as previous leaders from foreign countries. This is a very interesting song. "Feels Like Home" and "Losing You" are heartfelt touching tracks. I love this new disc from Randy Newman.
