The biggest mistake I ever made was listening to negative criticism of this band and waiting too long to buy their cds. Animal (or Randy Piper's Animal, as their now called) is the best new hardcore metal band out there, and undoubtedly the best emergent U.S. metal band in the last several years. At least in my opinion. But listen to this cd. In spite of yourself, I don't think you'll ever call me a liar after hearing this one. Animal's one of the few bands who can answer criticism by just saying: "Hearing is believing; listen to the cd and you'll see for yourself." The opening song here, "Violent New Breed" is just viciously good. Any metal band would kill for an opening song this tough. And you get two metallic ballads: "In the Mirror" (schizophrenic and troubling) and "Turn And Walk Away," the second of which was my favorite song on the cd when I first listened to it. Because I hadn't heard a rock-metal ballad this tight, well-composed and still full of a hard rock edge in about eighteen years. As to the rest, all I can say is that every song is just unblievable. "Animal In Me" and "B.O.O.M." are so good, they both could have been used to open or close the cd. "Hellchild" has a descending guitar riff that's reminiscent -but scarier than- the ee-ee-ee music from Psycho (the movie of course; and trust me, this guitar work is six-string artistry). Piper's fills in this song are awesome, simply inspired. "Salt" is slow but brutal and has a great opening stanza: "Love can turn to violence / Violence can turn love to hate / Screams can turn to silence / Silence can screams create." The rest of the songs in this cd just roll one into another and set fire to whatever it is you're listening to them with. The progress from Animal's first cd, 900 lb. Steam, to this one is like watching ten years' growth in a day. They've benefitted tremendously from Andres Ringman's (Platform Studio) mixing job. And, although it might seem trivial, the cd insert and logo design is much better than what we got on 900 lb. Steam. The Animal logo has lost its sophomoric, high-school look to where it now looks stylized and name-worthy. (Check out their website for an even better version.) And there's one thing I like here: other than backgrounds behind lyrics, there's not a single repeated picture to be found. You have variations of a theme (eyes staring at you behind animalistic locks of hair), but the photos are all individually unique. Animal doesn't fall in the trap (thanks to Mathias Bloom of Happy Trash Media) of having a repetitive cd insert and case. If you want one long and blistering cd full of metal that you're going to listen to over and over and over, make no mistake: Animal's "Violent New Breed" is the metal album to beat. Hook Sweeney Todd up to a short-circuiting mixing board, record the violence of it, and you get a mere idea of Animal's murderous brutality. I rarely say things like this, but you're a fool (like I was) if you let other peoples' views keep you from buying either 900 lb. Steam of Violent New Breed. Do yourself a favor and listen for yourself.
